This keynote speech discusses the importance of English proficiency for graduate employability in the globalized world. With economic and human resource markets becoming more borderless, graduates need to communicate effectively in English. Employability surveys across several countries show that employers value graduates with strong English skills and they tend to earn higher salaries and get promoted faster. In Malaysia as well, lack of communication skills, including low English proficiency, is a major reason for graduate unemployment. Recent policies in Malaysia aim to improve English standards according to the Common European Framework of Reference to produce a workforce proficient in English. The speaker argues that aligning English language education to global standards can enhance Malaysian graduates' employability internationally.
