Topic: Chinese New Year (Spring Festival)
Lesson Duration: 45 Minutes
Objectives:
Students shall acquire knowledge regarding the Chinese New Year. They will be able to use their
knowledge using all four basic language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
Activities:
1. Watch Video on Chinese New Year in English and Chinese to gain basic understanding of the
holiday and key terminology. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jyfCh5g6w4> (5minutes)
2. Teacher presents Power Point lesson on Chinese New Year. Presentation should mainly be in
Chinese, pictures will be used as visual support. Special attention will be paid towards
Chinese Zodiac. Student will be asked their understanding of Chinese Zodiac. (25 minutes)
Questions asked throughout PowerPoint (interact & seek comprehension confirmation)
a) 大家知不知道春节是什么?请小朋友们和我一起读“春节”(练习发音)
b) 哪个小朋友过过春节?
c) 大家知不知道春节的时候,中国人都做些什么?(Hint:家庭聚会、放鞭炮、大扫除。。。)
d) 今天我会给大家介绍春节的传统习惯和春节的食物。
e) 首先,我想和大家介绍生肖。大家知道生肖是什么吗?(hint:生肖是代表年的动物)
f) 小朋友们知不知道,一共有多少个生肖?
g) 谁知道生肖都有哪些动物?(小猫?小鸭子?小鱼?)
h) 介绍 12 个生肖的动物,练习发音。告诉小朋友:等一会儿要请小朋友来说 12 生肖
i) (2 m’ later)哪个小朋友可以说出 12 生肖?请一个 volunteer 说生肖,纠正发音
j) 小朋友们知不知道自己属什么?(问小朋友的出生年份:你是哪一年出生的?)
k) 让小朋友练习生肖的对话:你属什么?我属猪。
l) 哪个小朋友想和我一起练习对话?给 volunteer 发一个生肖的图片做奖励。
m) 小朋友们知不知道今年是什么年? (hint:羊年) 让小朋友练习“羊”的发音。
n) 过春节的时候,全家人要一起大扫除(解释大扫除,就是搞卫生)。让小朋友练习大扫
除的发音。问:小朋友们在家里会不会做家务?比如会不会帮爸爸妈妈做事情:洗碗、
扫地、洗衣服?
o) 大家知道这是什么吗?(展示 PPT 的窗花、春联)练习窗花、春联、门神、年画的发音
Turn to holiday food:
p) 过春节的时候,要和谁一起吃饭呢?家里人。家里人包括谁呢?兄弟姐妹、妈妈爸爸、
爷爷奶奶、外公外婆(姥姥姥爷)等
q) 大年三十的晚饭叫什么?年夜饭。有没有同学吃过年夜饭?
r) 大家知道饺子是什么吗?谁吃过饺子?好吃吗?谁包过饺子?练习饺子发音。
s) 年夜饭都有什么食物?年糕、鱼。练习发音
Ask about other activities:
t) 小朋友们过春节会收到什么什么东西?红包里面有什么东西?收到红包应该回答什么?

u) 大家有没有玩过这个?(展示鞭炮和烟火的图片)教鞭炮/爆竹、烟火的发音
v) 大年初一大家要看谁?走亲戚的时候要说什么?(给你拜年,恭喜发财)
3. Using the flashcards, students will be ‘quizzed’ on material in presentation on the key
vocabulary learned in the video and presentation. (5 minutes)
4. Have students practice the following in pairs (5 minutes):
a) 你属什么?我属猪
b) 今年是什么年?今年是猴年
c) 明年是什么年?明年是鸡年
5. Do matching worksheet (5 minutes)
6. If time allows - Make “福” decoration to prepare for the Chinese New Year. Use yellow and
black paper. Students will cut out the character “福” in black and paste it to the red paper.
Students will be instructed to hang the “福” upside down, as it symbolizes “fortune has
arrived” ( 福 到 了 ). (5 minutes). Play music video 《 恭 喜 发 财 》 as background

Materials and equipment:
1. Chalkboard or whiteboard
2. Computer and screen with internet connection
3. Flashcards
4. Red and Black markers
5. Pen, pencil, notebook
Homework or continuation:
1. Have students practice the vocabulary as homework and give dictation next class, as indicated
in activity 4.
2. Bring “福” home and hang up

Chinese New Year Lesson Plan
