There are 4 main ways to develop a character in a narrative: 1) What the character says and how they say it, 2) What other characters say about them, 3) Their actions and reactions, and 4) Descriptions of the character by the writer. The document then provides an example of how Candy describes Curly's wife in Of Mice and Men and tasks the reader to find two quotes from the beginning of the novel that show the contrasting characters of George and Lennie.

– Think: What does Lennie say? How does he say it? How do his statements, his
vernacular and his
“accent” SHOW you his character, values, abilities and passions?
2. What OTHER CHARACTERS say about the main character.
– Think: Candy in Of Mice and Men… it is through what Candy says about
____________ ______________ that the audience develops an image
of Curly’s wife as being _________ _________________ ________________).
3. What the main character does!
Their actions. Their reactions. Their moods. Their clothing choices and choices. The
culture and social … etc.
4. The actual descriptions (by the writer / director / artist) in the text.
Task: copy out two quotes from the opening pages of Of Mice and men which BEST show
the CONTRASTING characters of George and Lennie.
