- 2. Main Characters Muller – Shot and buried Detering – delusional(shell shock), out collecting flowers, and went awol Kat – Was killed while getting carried by Paul Paul Baumer
- 3. Paul Baumer The symbol of the lost generation in the German war. Throughout this chapter, he describes that inner destruction of what war does to your soul. He is able to express distinctive description of what beauty is on the outside while feeling an inner darkness. At this point he is facing death and has given up hope for what the war stands for . He realizes that the persons on the other side are just like him, human beings dyeing
- 4. Everyone whom he cared for has died. When you have a bond that relies strictly on survival and that is removed, it fills your heart with darkness. anxiety and fear. The natural instinct of the FLIGT of FIGHT response. It is a pure means of survival for him at that moment. It is either death now or death later in the disconnect of human nature. Although, war does not physically kill Paul, internally ,he has died ,paralyzed.

War continues Death is as big as illness Paul explains how the line is elastic and broken, allowing the enemy to flow through Muller is shot in the stomach Suffers greatly before eventually dying, Paul ends up burying him 2nd Company is suffering from low or spoiled supplies Equipment is broken and worn down

Paul loses Kat Kat gets shot in the shin Paul slings Kat over his shoulder in an attempt to bring him to safety During their breaks they would talk of what they would do during peacetime When Paul finally reaches the triage area he fell to the ground and resting Kat besides him Without realizing that at some point Kat had caught a splinter to the head along the way He narrates “Then I know nothing more”

Paul Loses Hope After losing his whole brotherhood, Paul lost hope Becomes detached from reality and just focuses on the basic element of survival Becomes a “human animal” instincts to kill and survive At this point in the war it is not only a traumatic experience, it is actually something that transformed the purpose of human existence into an endless suffering.
