Desteny repurposed materials from her grandmother's shed to create a shutter wall décor. She gathered jars, shutters, and other items to design four products and selected a shutter jar design that could be used to hold plants, makeup brushes, or cotton swabs. Desteny found inspiration for an "earthy" interior décor piece from the outside of homes while visiting her grandmother in Mexico during spring break. She incorporated recycled materials with meaning and stories behind each item to create a unique home furnishing.
2. How my shutter wall décor came to be
• When we were given this assignment I decided I would gather materials from
my grandmas shed that I could repurpose. I knew I wanted to find
something that would be normally used for the outside of a home, but
repurpose it make for the inside of the home for décor. I wanted to make
sure that my product could be used in all types of the house.
3. Pre Design Process
• I really did not have a pre design I wanted to do only that I wanted it remind
me the outside of the home and it had to be antique looking.
• When I got to my grandma’s home I gathered a lot of supplies and tired to
figure out what would be more useful for the consumers and be unique.
• I sketched four designs and picked the shutter jar design because you can use
it to put plants in the jar or makeup brushes or cotton swabs. This design
was what I think to be very useful and a good use of recycled material.
4. Who, What, Where, When, and Why.
• Who: I repurposed the food jars and shutters to become one unique home furnishing
piece.
• What: I repurposed food jars and a shed shutters.
• Where: At my grandmas shed behind her home is where I found my items I
repurposed.
• When: I did my scavenger hunt in my grandmas shed during the spring break.
• Why: I knew my grandma loves to keep everything, so that why I choose to look there. I
knew I wanted to use the shutters because I remembered that the 2018 trend is earthy,
so why not incorporate the outside décor of a home to the inside of it.
5. My Product Story
• During the spring break I went to visit my grandma in Mexico. I knew I wanted to get
materials from her shed because she loves to keep everything. When I told her about my
project she allowed me to dig in her “pot of gold” as she likes to call it. The first thing I
noticed was the shutter when I went over to the shed to begin my scavenger hunt. The
shutters were barely having on the shed, I asked my grandma if I could have the one that
was about to fall down, which she allowed me to do. I then took it off and went into the
shed, so when I entered I was overwhelmed by the stuff she had. I found the jars in a box,
which she loves to keep to store species in the food jars. I found the horseshoe outside in
her plant garden that had weeds growing around it. I also found some wood panels, desk
drawer, old book, old records, and tons of rope. I brought back all the materials to my home
in Texas and came up with four designs, which I then picked the shutter jar one. I loved how
when I look at the product I know where every piece came from and the story it has behind
it.
