The collection of plantation records contains unique records of the plantation owner and often his descendants that may connect an individual to his or her family. Joan's presentation focuses on "Records of Ante-Bellum Southern Plantations from the Revolution through the Civil War" by University Publications of America. The Family History Library has acquired this collection which consists of 1213 microfilm reels and includes records organized in series (A-N) of finding aid of microfiche edition of the same name. Joan teaches that research foundation must be built on research and documentation of the African American individual and his or her extended family from the present back to 1870, and the slave owner name and the place where the slave and the owner lived.

The author is a member of the history department at the
University of Oklahoma. A version of this paper was his
presidential address to the Pacific Coast Branch, American
Historical Association, at its ninety-first annual meeting in
August 1998 in San Diego, California.
I was working on the galleys for my book, Intimate Fron-
tiers: Sex, Gender, and Culture in Early California, when I happened
to hear several historians on National Public Radio. They were
explaining why a new historical organization, The History So-
ciety, was needed. Among other things, they argued that the
proliferation of gender studies in history threatened to trivial-
ize the discipline. We should be thinking about big things, and
we should be seeking the "truth."I I suspect that there are many
historians who believe that sex and gender are trivial subjects.
Sex and gender are merely manifestations of biology that are
common to all humans. What have they to do with the big
things in history? How does knowledge of sex and gender help
us discover some of the truth about the past?

I was working on the galleys for my book, Intimate Fron-
tiers: Sex, Gender, and Culture in Early California, when I happened
to hear several historians on National Public Radio. They were
explaining why a new historical organization, The History So-
ciety, was needed. Among other things, they argued that the
proliferation of gender studies in history threatened to trivial-
ize the discipline. We should be thinking about big things, and
we should be seeking the "truth."I I suspect that there are many
historians who believe that sex and gender are trivial subjects.
Sex and gender are merely manifestations of biology that are
common to all humans. What have they to do with the big

University of Oklahoma. A version of this paper was his
presidential address to the Pacific Coast Branch, American
Historical Association, at its ninety-first annual meeting in
August 1998 in San Diego, California.

This essay addresses those questions. Surely the California
gold rush qualifies as one of the "Big Things" in history. The
discovery of gold in 1848 set off a human migration that was
truly global in scope. Hundreds of thousands of people from
every continent set off for California. As a national event, the

American Dream Week 3 Part 1
1) Native Americans faced exclusion from the American Dream through the loss of their lands and being forced onto reservations. They were pushed further and further west through acts like the Indian Removal Act of 1830 which led to the tragic Trail of Tears.
2) The Dawes Act of 1887 attempted to assimilate Native Americans by allotting individual family plots of land and educating children in boarding schools, but ultimately resulted in Native Americans losing half their lands.
3) Conflicts between settlers and Native Americans over land continued throughout American history, culminating in events like the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, as Native Americans resisted being confined to reservations.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
