This lookbook features surface design patterns created by Christina Cheng in April 2015. The patterns were inspired by Josephine Baker, an entertainer and activist who fought against racism and created a "Rainbow Tribe" by adopting children from different ethnicities. Baker's vision of diverse tribes coming together to dance drove the collection's designs. The lookbook includes patterns aimed to exude power, be subtly colorful, provide power and comfort, be easy and neutral, achieve weekend chic style, and feature worry-free lace.

Wak (Day 15)
Kevin A. Williams, known as WAK, is one of the most popular African American artists in the nation. His company, WAK Artistry, distributes lithograph prints that are some of the most widely circulated urban fine art. WAK creates his mixed-medium artwork and then reproduces them as lithographs in various editions. His art has been featured on television shows and he is a popular personality at art shows and African American events. WAK uses acrylics and air brush techniques to express love, community, and family through his paintings.

The Girlfriends! women's ministry hosted their annual Domestic Violence Awareness Breakfast which over 850 people attended, almost double the previous year. The event featured a dramatization portraying domestic violence situations, stirring facts about domestic violence from a speaker, and a performance by Grammy award winning artist CeCe Winans. Donations were collected for local organizations supporting domestic violence victims. The founder shared how the ministry began in response to a friend who had passed away from domestic violence.

The document is a poem about coloring Christmas with love. It describes different colors associated with Christmas - Santa's red and white suit, sugar plums dancing in your head are purple, the Christmas tree is green and gift paper is blue. It encourages spreading love by giving friendly greetings and smiles to everyone you meet and saying "Merry Christmas" while coloring the holiday with love.

Submission forms for sharing Civil War stories from each of North Carolina's 100 counties can be obtained in the Randolph Room of the Asheboro Public Library or online. Volunteers will be on hand January 25th from 6:30-9pm to collect stories verbally or in writing from all contributors who will become members of the North Carolina Civil War History Center through December 2016 as it seeks to promote understanding of the era through 100 stories from each county.

The newsletter provides updates on past volunteer events at Harbourfront Centre in 2016 and previews upcoming 2017 events. It thanks volunteers for their contributions in 2016, including over 6,800 shifts and 24,599 hours of work. It highlights the International Festival of Authors and Reelworld Film Festival. The newsletter also provides statistics on volunteer hours and an update from the Volunteer Coordinator. Opportunities to volunteer at programs at The Power Plant gallery are described.
The Essay
This exhibition at the Ellarslie Museum explores African American art collected by African American women. It features works in various mediums from both prominent and lesser-known artists. At the center are five serigraphs by Romare Bearden depicting biblical stories that convey messages of tradition and value. Other artists represented, like Mercy Moyo and Mickalene Thomas, use imagery of strong African American women. Themes of family, home, and shared cultural experiences are prominent. Mediums like collage and portraiture allow artists to represent the multidimensional nature of African American life. Collectors are also profiled who support artists and collect works that celebrate African American resilience, beauty, and history.
SEP.2016 LEAD Ledger
Family Weekend will be held September 16-17 and will include events such as a welcome BBQ, movie night, comedy show, and family brunch hosted by LEAD. It is an annual tradition that allows family to experience UCF and Knights culture. Last month, LEAD scholar Selena Houck spent her summer studying abroad in South Africa, where she worked with an orphanage and led a dress distribution project. Upcoming in February is Leadership Week, which will feature keynote speaker Dr. Barbara Jenkins, the superintendent of Orange County Public Schools who has received numerous awards and recognition for her accomplishments.

Maybe you’ve just retired, having worked hard for years in return for an annual salary. Unless you’re a professional parent, the chances are you’re used to being paid for the work you do. And, whatever your circumstances, you probably consider your time a precious commodity. So, why give your time for free? Or, as is the case with the majority of international volunteering opportunities, why pay for the privilege of working for nothing? Grandville Reads is a community reading event in the City of Grandville, MI hosted by the Grandville branch of the Kent District Library.

Gina Alexander is a designer who creates custom photo handbags for many celebrities. She donates a portion of each bag sale to the charity Hope for Children, which assists families interested in adoption. Gina is also an active board member for the philanthropy organization.

The author Cheryl Strayed drew a large crowd to an advance screening of the film adaptation of her memoir "Wild" at The Picture House. Strayed participated in a Q&A after the screening where she praised the filmmakers for honoring the book and telling a complex human story. Strayed also revealed that she had a cameo in the beginning of the film dropping off the main character at the start of her journey. Strayed discussed her writing process and how she always knew she wanted to be a writer even though she didn't grow up around other writers.

- 2. DANCE OF THE TRIBES Josephine Baker was a woman of many talents. She used her influence in the entertainment industry to fight for a more diverse world. She was an activist who spoke against racism. In showing her love for all peoples of different ethnicity, she adopted many children from around the world and called them her “Rain- bow Tribe.” Her heart’s desire for a diverse world and the idea that tribes frequently come together to dance became the driving inspira- tion behind this collection of patterns.
