The United States developed the atomic bomb during World War II and used it against Japan in 1945 to force their surrender and end the war. While Germany had also tried to develop an atomic bomb, the U.S. completed theirs first and dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki after Japan refused multiple surrender demands. The bombings succeeded in defeating Japan and marked the conclusion of World War II.
