Swing Motor

Remove & Install Swing Motor
Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection,
maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with
suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing
fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to
collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations
and mandates.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure.
Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the
pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick and bucket)
before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.
1. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system as follows:
a. Fully retract the stick cylinder rod.
b. Adjust the position of the bucket so it will be flat on the ground when the boom is lowered.
c. Lower the boom until the bucket is flat on the ground.
d. Stop the engine.
e. Place the engine start switch in the "ON" position without starting the engine.

f. Move the control levers for the boom, stick, bucket and swing to all full stroke positions. This
will release any pressure that might be present in the pilot system.
g. Slowly move the travel pilot control pedal to "FORWARD" and "REVERSE" travel positions.
This will release any pressure in the travel circuit.
h. Slowly loosen and remove the pressure cap on the hydraulic tank to release the hydraulic
pressure.
i. Reinstall and tighten the pressure cap on the hydraulic tank.
j. The pressure in the hydraulic system has been released and implement/travel lines and
components can be removed.
2. Drain the oil from the hydraulic oil tank into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The
capacity of the hydraulic oil tank is 115 liters (29.9 U.S. gal).
3. For installation purposes, put identification marks on three hose assemblies (2). Disconnect
three hose assemblies (2) from swing motor (1). Put plugs in the ends of the hose assemblies to
prevent oil loss and to keep contaminants out of the hydraulic system.
4. Remove two bolts (3) and the washers that hold swing motor (1) to the swing drive. Remove
swing motor (1) from the swing drive.
5. Remove O-ring seal (4) from swing motor (1).
NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the swing motor.
6. Make sure the mating surfaces of the swing motor and swing drive are thoroughly clean and
dry.
7. Check the condition of O-ring seal (4) used between the swing motor and the swing drive. If the
seal is damaged, use a new part for replacement.
8. Install O-ring seal (4) on swing motor (1).

9. Put swing motor (1) in position in the machine. Install two bolts (3) and the washers that hold it.
10. Connect three hydraulic hose assemblies (2) to the swing motor in their original locations.
NOTICE
To prevent damage to the swing motor, it must be filled with hydraulic
oil prior to operation.
11. Fill the hydraulic oil tank and swing motor with oil to the correct level. Refer to the Operation
& Maintenance Manual for the correct filling procedures.
12. Start the machine, and check the operation of the swing drive. Also, check for leaks.
Disassemble & Assemble Swing Motor
Start By:
a. remove swing motor
1. Remove O-ring seal (3) from housing (2). Use Tool (A) to remove retaining ring (1) from
housing (2).

Cover (5) must be removed from housing (2) using shop air pressure.
When air pressure is applied through fitting (6), cover (5) will come off
of shaft (2) with force. This can result in personal injury. To prevent
possible personal injury during removal of cover (5), install a suitable
size bolt and washer in the end of shaft (4) to retain the cover.
2. Install a suitable sized bolt and washer in the end of shaft (1). This will keep cover (5) from
coming off of shaft (4) with force when removing cover (5) from housing (2) with air pressure
applied through fitting (6). Apply shop air pressure (free of water) of approximately 525 kPa (75
psi) in fitting (6) to loosen cover (5) from housing (2). Remove the bolt and washer from the end
of shaft (4). Remove cover (5) from shaft (4).
3. Remove seal (7) from cover (5).
4. Remove O-ring seal (8) from housing (2).

5. Turn housing (2) over 180 degrees , and set it on wood blocks. Remove four socket head bolts
(9) and head (10) from housing (2).
6. Mark the orientation of plate (11) in relation to head (10); then remove the plate.
7. Remove valve assembly (12) and plug (13) from head (10). Remove the O-ring seals from valve
assembly (12) and plug (13).
8. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove bearing race (14) and shims (15) (not shown) from head
(10).

9. Use Tooling (C) (not shown) to remove bearing (16) and washer (17) from shaft (4).
10. Use a soft hammer to remove shaft (4), with bearing (19) and race (18), out of housing (2) in
the direction indicated.
11. Use Tool (D) and a press to remove bearing (19) and ring (20) from shaft (4).

12. Remove cylinder block (21) from housing (2).
There is spring force against against washer/s (25) and washer (24).
When retaining ring (26) is removed, the spring force will be released.
To prevent possible personal injury, removal of the internal
components of the cylinder block should be performed in a press in
order to retain washer (25), washer (24) and spring (23).
13. Use Tool (E) and a press in order to compress spring (23). Use Tool (A) to remove retaining
ring (26) from cylinder block (21). Slowly release the spring pressure with the press. Remove
retaining ring (26), washers (25), washer (24), spring (23) and washer (22) from cylinder block
(21).
14. Remove pin (27) from housing (2).

15. Remove seven pistons (28), retaining ring (29) and retraction plate (30) from housing (2).
16. Remove slide disc (31) from housing (2).
NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the swing motor.
NOTICE
Prior to assembly of the swing motor, check the condition of all parts
for wear or damage. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts
for replacement. During assembly of the swing motor, apply clean
hydraulic oil on the components.
17. Heat bearing (19) and ring (20) to a temperature of 180 °C (356 °F). Install the ring and
bearing on shaft (4).
18. Install shaft (4) with bearing (19) and ring (20) in housing (2).

19. Install washer (17) on shaft (4).
20. Heat bearing (16) to a temperature of 180 °C (356 °F). Install it on shaft (4) until it makes
contact with washer (17).
21. Install shims (15) and bearing race (14) in head (10). Install head (1) on housing (2) with four
socket head bolts (9).
22. Install a suitable sized bolt in the end of shaft (4). Use a pry bar in order to pry up on the bolt;
then measure the end play of shaft (4) with Tool (F). The required end play is .010 to .050 mm
(.0004 to .0020 in). If the end play is not within specification, correct the clearance with shims
(15) under bearing race (14) in head (10).
23. Remove four socket head bolts (9) and head (10) from housing (2). Remove bearing (16) and
washer (17) from shaft (4). Remove shaft (4) from housing (2).

24. Install plate (11) on head (10). Use Tool (G), and measure the clearance between plate (11)
and head (10). Record this dimension.
25. Install shaft (4) with bearing (19) and ring (20 into housing (2). Install cylinder block (21) with
washer (24), washer/s (25) and retaining ring (26) on shaft (4) in housing (2). Install washer (17)
and preheated bearing (16) on shaft (4). Use Tool (G) to measure the clearance between housing
(2) and the top of cylinder block (21). Compare this measurement with the measurement
determined in Step 24. Use washer/s (25) to obtain the proper clearance.
26. Remove bearing (16) and washer (17) from shaft (4). Remove cylinder block (21); then
remove retaining ring (26), washer/s (25) and washer (24) from cylinder block (21).
27. Remove shaft (4) with bearing (19) and ring (20) from housing (2).
28. Use a micrometer to measure the thickness of slide disc (31), the shoulder height of seven
pistons (28), the thickness of retraction disc (30) and retaining ring (29).

29. Install sliding disc (31) in housing (2), and align the small slot in the sliding disc with hole
(32) in housing (2).
30. Install retraction plate (30) with seven pistons (28) and retaining ring (29) in housing (2).
Make sure to align the small hole in the retaining ring with the small hole in the housing.
31. Check the clearance between the retraction disc and the retaining ring with a 1.5 mm (.06 in)
feeler gage. The feeler gage must not go between these components.
32. Install pin (27) in housing (2) making sure that it aligns with the small holes in the sliding disc
and the retaining ring.

33. Install washer (22), spring (23), washer (24) and washer/s (25) in cylinder block (21). Use
Tooling (E) and an appropriate press to compress spring (23) far enough to install retaining ring
(26) with Tool (A).
34. Install cylinder block (21) in housing (2) making sure to align the seven pistons in their
original bores.
35. Install shaft (4) in housing (2). Install bearing race (18) (not shown) in housing (2). Tap it in
place with a soft faced hammer until it stops.
36. Install the O-ring in housing (2).

37. Install seal (7) in cover (5).
38. Use a press and a suitable drive plate to press cover (5) in housing (2). Use Tool (A) to install
retaining ring (1) in housing (2). Install O-ring seal (3) on housing (2).
39. Install washer (17) on shaft (4).

40. Heat bearing (16) to 180 °C (356 °F), and install it on shaft (4) until it contacts washer (17).
41. Install valve assembly (12), the plug and O-ring seal (13) in head (10).
42. Install plate (11) on head (10).
43. Install head (10) on housing (2). Install four socket head bolts (9) to secure head (10) to
housing (2).
NOTICE
To prevent damage to the swing motor, the housing must be filled with
oil at least to the fill port prior to operation.
44. Fill the swing motor with hydraulic oil before installing it in the machine.

Remove & Install Swing Drive
Start By:
a. remove swing motor

1. For installation purposes, put identification marks on 16 hose assemblies (1). Disconnect hose
assemblies (1) from tube assemblies (2). Put plugs in the ends of the hose assemblies to prevent oil
loss and to keep contaminants out of the hydraulic system.
2. For installation purposes, put identification marks on seven tube assemblies (3) and four hose
assemblies (4). Disconnect the seven tube assemblies and four hose assemblies from the main
control valve. Put plugs in the ends of the tube assemblies and hose assemblies to prevent oil loss
and to keep contaminants out of the hydraulic system.
3. For installation purposes, put identification marks on three hose assemblies (5). Disconnect the
three hose assemblies from the wing drive (6). Put plugs in the ends of the hose assemblies to
prevent oil loss and to keep contaminants out of the hydraulic system.
4. Remove 12 socket head bolts (7) that hold swing drive (6) to the frame of the machine.
5. Mark the position of the swing drive in relation to the frame.

6. Install Tool (A) in swing drive (6) as shown. Fasten a hoist to Tool (A). Carefully remove the
swing drive from the machine. The weight of the swing drive is 84 kg (185 lb).
NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the swing drive.
7. Make sure the mating surfaces of the swing drive and frame of the machine are thoroughly
clean.
8. Fasten Tool (A) and a hoist to swing drive (6) as shown. Put the swing drive in position in the
frame of the machine in its original position.
9. Install 12 socket head bolts (7) that hold the swing drive to the frame of the machine. Tighten
the 12 socket head bolts evenly to a torque of 260 N·m (190 lb ft).
10. Check the condition of all O-ring seals in the ends of the hose assemblies and tube assemblies
that connect to the swing drive. If any of the seals are damaged use new parts for replacement.
11. Connect three hose assemblies (5) to the swing drive in their original locations.

12. Connect four hose assemblies (4) and seven tube assemblies (3) to the main control valve in
their original locations.
13. Connect 16 hose assemblies (1) to tube assemblies (2) in their original locations.
14. Fill the swing drive with oil prior to installation of the swing motor. Refer to the Operation &
Maintenance Manual for the correct specified oil.

Start By:
a. remove swing drive
1. Put an alignment mark on flange (1) and gear (3) for assembly purposes.
There is spring force on flange (1). When six socket head bolts (2) are
removed, the spring force will be released. To prevent possible personal
injury, use the procedure in Step 1 and Step 2 to release the spring force
on flange (1).
2. Remove two socket head bolts (2) that are 180 degrees apart from each other. Replace the two
original socket head bolts with two 096-0187 Socket Head Bolts. These bolts are longer in length.
Remove the four remaining original socket head bolts (3) that hold flange (1) to gear (3).
3. Slowly and evenly loosen two 096-0187 Socket Head Bolts (4) to release the spring pressure
behind flange (1).
4. Remove flange (1) from gear (3).

5. Remove O-ring seal (5) from flange (1).
6. Remove O-ring seal (6) from gear (3).
7. Remove 16 springs (7) from the brake piston.
8. Remove shaft (8) from gear (3).
9. Use Tool (A) to remove brake piston (9) from gear (3).

16. Disassemble planetary gear assembly (16) as follows:
a. Use Tool (B) to remove three retaining rings (17).
b. Use Tool (C) to remove three planetary gears (18).
c. Remove shaft (19) from the planetary gear.

18. Remove two socket head bolts (20). Remove gear (3) from housing (21).

20. Remove and disassemble planetary gear assembly (24) as follows:
a. Use Tool (B) to remove four retaining rings (23) from planetary gear (24).
b. Use Tool (C) to remove four planetary gears (25).

c. Use Tool (D) to remove retaining ring (27) from shaft (26).
d. Remove washer (28) from shaft (26).

21. Use a hammer and punch to bend out the indentation on nut (29).

NOTE: Housing (21) is temporarily installed back in the machine in order to loosen nut (29).
22. Temporarily install housing (21) back in the machine. Use three original socket head bolts (30)
and washers to fasten housing (21) to the frame of the machine as shown.
23. Use Tooling (E) to loosen nut (29).
24. Remove three socket head bolts (30) and the washers. Remove housing (21) from the machine.
25. Remove nut (29) from shaft (26).
26. Remove ring (31) from shaft (26).
27. Use a press to remove shaft (26) from housing (21).

Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick and bucket) before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed. 1. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system as follows: a. Fully retract the stick cylinder rod. b. Adjust the position of the bucket so it will be flat on the ground when the boom is lowered. c. Lower the boom until the bucket is flat on the ground. d. Stop the engine. e.   • 3. f. Move the control levers for the boom, stick, bucket and swing to all full stroke positions. This will release any pressure that might be present in the pilot system. g. Slowly move the travel pilot control pedal to "FORWARD" and "REVERSE" travel positions. This will release any pressure in the travel circuit. h. Slowly loosen and remove the pressure cap on the hydraulic tank to release the hydraulic pressure. i. Reinstall and tighten the pressure cap on the hydraulic tank. j. The pressure in the hydraulic system has been released and implement/travel lines and components can be removed. 2. Drain the oil from the hydraulic oil tank into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the hydraulic oil tank is 115 liters (29.9 U.S. gal). 3. For installation purposes, put identification marks on three hose assemblies (2). Disconnect three hose assemblies (2) from swing motor (1). Put plugs in the ends of the hose assemblies to prevent oil loss and to keep contaminants out of the hydraulic system. 4. Remove two bolts (3) and the washers that hold swing motor (1) to the swing drive. Remove swing motor (1) from the swing drive. 5. Remove O-ring seal (4) from swing motor (1). NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the swing motor. 6. Make sure the mating surfaces of the swing motor and swing drive are thoroughly clean and dry. 7. Check the condition of O-ring seal (4) used between the swing motor and the swing drive. If the seal is damaged, use a new part for replacement. 8.   • 4. 9. Put swing motor (1) in position in the machine. Install two bolts (3) and the washers that hold it. 10. Connect three hydraulic hose assemblies (2) to the swing motor in their original locations. NOTICE To prevent damage to the swing motor, it must be filled with hydraulic oil prior to operation. 11. Fill the hydraulic oil tank and swing motor with oil to the correct level. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for the correct filling procedures. 12. Start the machine, and check the operation of the swing drive. Also, check for leaks. Disassemble & Assemble Swing Motor Start By: a. remove swing motor 1. Remove O-ring seal (3) from housing (2).   • 5. Cover (5) must be removed from housing (2) using shop air pressure. When air pressure is applied through fitting (6), cover (5) will come off of shaft (2) with force. This can result in personal injury. To prevent possible personal injury during removal of cover (5), install a suitable size bolt and washer in the end of shaft (4) to retain the cover. 2. Install a suitable sized bolt and washer in the end of shaft (1). This will keep cover (5) from coming off of shaft (4) with force when removing cover (5) from housing (2) with air pressure applied through fitting (6). Apply shop air pressure (free of water) of approximately 525 kPa (75 psi) in fitting (6) to loosen cover (5) from housing (2). Remove the bolt and washer from the end of shaft (4). Remove cover (5) from shaft (4). 3. Remove seal (7) from cover (5). 4.   • 6. 5. Turn housing (2) over 180 degrees , and set it on wood blocks. Remove four socket head bolts (9) and head (10) from housing (2). 6. Mark the orientation of plate (11) in relation to head (10); then remove the plate. 7. Remove valve assembly (12) and plug (13) from head (10). Remove the O-ring seals from valve assembly (12) and plug (13). 8. Use a soft hammer to remove shaft (4), with bearing (19) and race (18), out of housing (2) in the direction indicated. 11.   • 8. 12. Remove cylinder block (21) from housing (2). There is spring force against against washer/s (25) and washer (24). When retaining ring (26) is removed, the spring force will be released. To prevent possible personal injury, removal of the internal components of the cylinder block should be performed in a press in order to retain washer (25), washer (24) and spring (23). 13. Use Tool (E) and a press in order to compress spring (23). Use Tool (A) to remove retaining ring (26) from cylinder block (21). Slowly release the spring pressure with the press. Remove retaining ring (26), washers (25), washer (24), spring (23) and washer (22) from cylinder block (21). 14.   • 9. 15. Remove seven pistons (28), retaining ring (29) and retraction plate (30) from housing (2). 16. Remove slide disc (31) from housing (2). NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the swing motor. NOTICE Prior to assembly of the swing motor, check the condition of all parts for wear or damage. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. During assembly of the swing motor, apply clean hydraulic oil on the components. 17. Heat bearing (19) and ring (20) to a temperature of 180 °C (356 °F). Install the ring and bearing on shaft (4). 18.   • 10. 19. Install washer (17) on shaft (4). 20. Heat bearing (16) to a temperature of 180 °C (356 °F). Install it on shaft (4) until it makes contact with washer (17). 21. Install shims (15) and bearing race (14) in head (10). Install head (1) on housing (2) with four socket head bolts (9). 22. Install a suitable sized bolt in the end of shaft (4). Use a pry bar in order to pry up on the bolt; then measure the end play of shaft (4) with Tool (F). The required end play is .010 to .050 mm (.0004 to .0020 in). If the end play is not within specification, correct the clearance with shims (15) under bearing race (14) in head (10). 23. Remove four socket head bolts (9) and head (10) from housing (2).   • 11. 24. Install plate (11) on head (10). Use Tool (G), and measure the clearance between plate (11) and head (10). Record this dimension. 25. Install shaft (4) with bearing (19) and ring (20 into housing (2). Install cylinder block (21) with washer (24), washer/s (25) and retaining ring (26) on shaft (4) in housing (2). Install washer (17) and preheated bearing (16) on shaft (4). Use Tool (G) to measure the clearance between housing (2) and the top of cylinder block (21). Compare this measurement with the measurement determined in Step 24. Use washer/s (25) to obtain the proper clearance. 26. Remove bearing (16) and washer (17) from shaft (4). Remove cylinder block (21); then remove retaining ring (26), washer/s (25) and washer (24) from cylinder block (21). 27. Remove shaft (4) with bearing (19) and ring (20) from housing (2). 28.   • 12. 29. Install sliding disc (31) in housing (2), and align the small slot in the sliding disc with hole (32) in housing (2). 30. Install retraction plate (30) with seven pistons (28) and retaining ring (29) in housing (2). Make sure to align the small hole in the retaining ring with the small hole in the housing. 31. Check the clearance between the retraction disc and the retaining ring with a 1.5 mm (.06 in) feeler gage. The feeler gage must not go between these components. 32. Install cylinder block (21) in housing (2) making sure to align the seven pistons in their original bores. 35. Install shaft (4) in housing (2). Install bearing race (18) (not shown) in housing (2). Tap it in place with a soft faced hammer until it stops. 36.   • 18. 6. Install Tool (A) in swing drive (6) as shown. Fasten a hoist to Tool (A). Carefully remove the swing drive from the machine. The weight of the swing drive is 84 kg (185 lb). NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the swing drive. 7. Make sure the mating surfaces of the swing drive and frame of the machine are thoroughly clean. 8. Fasten Tool (A) and a hoist to swing drive (6) as shown. Put the swing drive in position in the frame of the machine in its original position. 9. Install 12 socket head bolts (7) that hold the swing drive to the frame of the machine. Tighten the 12 socket head bolts evenly to a torque of 260 N·m (190 lb ft). 10. Check the condition of all O-ring seals in the ends of the hose assemblies and tube assemblies that connect to the swing drive. If any of the seals are damaged use new parts for replacement. 11. Remove O-ring seal (22) from housing (21). 20. Remove and disassemble planetary gear assembly (24) as follows: a. Use Tool (B) to remove four retaining rings (23) from planetary gear (24). b.   • 27. NOTE: Housing (21) is temporarily installed back in the machine in order to loosen nut (29). 22. Temporarily install housing (21) back in the machine. Use three original socket head bolts (30) and washers to fasten housing (21) to the frame of the machine as shown. 23. Use Tooling (E) to loosen nut (29). 24. Remove three socket head bolts (30) and the washers. Remove housing (21) from the machine. 25. Remove nut (29) from shaft (26). 26. Remove ring (31) from shaft (26). 27.
