1. Clean the components and inspect the components. Replace components that are worn or
damaged.

2. Use Tooling (A) in order to install ring (2) in retainer (1) .
3. Use Tooling (A) in order to install lip seal (4) in the hub. Orient the lip of the seal toward
the inside of the hub. Apply clean oil to the lip of the seal.

4. Install pins (3) in hub (5) .
5. Position retainer (1) on the hub. Install the fifteen bolts that hold the components together.
Tighten the bolts evenly to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).
6. Remove Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) from the final drive.

Assembly, "Final Drive - Assemble" in this module.

7. Position sun gear (6) in the planetary carriers. Install Tooling (E) in order to hold the sun
gear in place.
8. Install O-ring seal (8) and small O-ring seal (9) .
9. Use a hoist with Tooling (D) in order to install the planetary carrier. The weight of the
planetary carrier is approximately 250 kg (550 lb).
10. Position the planetary carrier on hub (7). Align the gears and slide the planetary carrier into
the hub. Push the planetary carriers until the planetary carrier is approximately 25 mm (1
inch) from the hub.
11. Install Tooling (F) in order to hold the planetary carrier in place. Remove Tooling (D) .
12. Install 26 bolts (10) that hold the planetary carrier to the hub. Remove Tooling (F) in order
to install three bolts (10). Tighten bolts (10) to a torque of 475 ± 50 N·m (350 ± 37 lb ft).
13. Remove Tooling (E) .

14. Use Tooling (G) in order to install the outer axle. Make sure that the thrust button between
the inner axle and the outer axle is installed in the end of the outer axle.
15. Install retainer (11) .
16. Install the O-ring seal in cover (13). Install cover (13) .
NOTICE
Several minutes are required to completely fill each final drive
compartment with oil. The oil must flow through bearings to fill the
inner compartment.
Make certain the entire quantity of oil as specified on the Refill
Capacity chart is added to the final drive.
Operation of the machine with incorrect final drive oil level will cause
final drive failure.
17. Orient drain plug (12) downward. Tighten the drain plug to a torque of 105 ± 10 N·m (75 ±
7 lb ft). Fill the final drive with oil.

A. Separate the track. See the procedure in Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Separate" in
this module.
Note: The planetary carriers of the final drives can be removed directly from the machine. See the
procedure in Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive Planetary Carrier (In Chassis) - Remove"
in this module.

Without the sun gear in place, the brakes are ineffective. Personal
injury or death could result. Provide other means to hold or stop the
machine.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Position drain plug (2) of the final drive toward the bottom. Remove the drain plug, and
drain the oil from the final drive.
2. Remove the three bolts and cover (1) from the final drive. Remove the O-ring seal from
cover (1) .

3. Remove the retainer from the sun gear of the final drive.
4. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove the outer axle.
5. Adjust the top bracket of Tooling (B) until Dimension (X) is 38 mm (1.5 inch). Adjust the
lower plate so that the spacers are oriented away from the vertical leg of the tool.

6. Remove two bolts from the sprocket segments. Fasten a hoist with Tooling (B) on the final
drive.
Note: Do not remove bolts (5) that hold the steering clutch and brake to the frame.
7. Remove bolts (3) that hold the final drive to the main frame. Do not remove bolts (5) .
8. Remove bolts (4) that hold the final drive and the steering differential and brake together.
9. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove the final drive from the machine. The final drive weighs
approximately 625 kg (1375 lb).
10. Remove the O-ring seal from the face of the steering differential or from the final drive hub.

Start By:
A. Remove the final drive. See the procedure in Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive -
Remove" in this module.
1. Install Tooling (A) on the planetary carrier. Fasten a hoist to Tooling (A). The weight of the

3. Remove the six bolts that hold three plates (1). Remove the O-ring seals from the plates.

4. Use Tooling (B) and a press in order to remove shafts (4) from the planetary carrier.
5. Remove gears (5) from the planetary carrier.
6. Remove bearing cones (6) from the sides of gears (5) .
7. Use Tooling (C) in order to remove the bearing cups from the sides of gears (5) .

8. Use Tooling (D) with a hoist in order to remove planetary carrier (8) with sun gear (7) from
the hub. The weight of the planetary carrier and of the sun gear is approximately 46 kg (100
lb).
Note: There is a second sun gear in the center of the planetary carrier that is free to fall if
the sun gear stays with the planetary carrier. See Step 15.
9. Turn over the carrier with the sun gear. Remove spiral ring (9) from sun gear (7) .
10. Use a hoist in order to remove planetary carrier (8) from sun gear (7). The weight of the

11. Use a hammer and a punch in order to drive roll pins (10) in the planetary gear shafts.
12. Use a press in order to remove the shafts. Remove the roll pins from the planetary gear
shafts.
13. Remove gears (11) .
14. Remove bearings (12) from each sides of gears (11) .
15. Remove ring (13) and sun gear (14) from the hub.

16. Remove bolts (16) and retainer (15). Use Tooling (E) and a press in order to remove ring
(17) from retainer (15) .
17. Use a magnet in order to remove pins (18) from the hub.

18. Use Tooling (F) with a hoist in order to remove hub (18) and ring gear (19). Remove
Tooling (F). The hub and the ring gear as a unit weigh approximately 73 kg (160 lb).
19. Turn over hub (18) and ring gear (19). Remove retainer (20) from the ring gear.
20. Remove hub (18) from ring gear (19). The hub weighs approximately 22 kg (48 lb).

21. Install Tooling (G) on hub (22) .
22. Use Tooling (G) in order to remove hub (22) from hub (23) .
23. Remove Tooling (G). Remove bearing cone (21) from the hub.
24. Install Tooling (H) on hub (22). The hub weighs approximately 260 kg (580 lb).
25. Use a hoist with Tooling (H) in order to remove hub (22) from hub (23) .
Note: When you lift the hub, avoid contact between the hub and the fitting on the hydraulic
cylinder.
26. Turn over hub (22). Remove Duo-Cone seal (25). Use a hammer and a punch in order to
remove bearing cup (26) .
Note: Mark the components of the Duo-Cone seals when you plan a reinstallation. Install
the seal components in the original positions.
27. Turn over the hub. Remove bearing cup (24) .

28. Remove Duo-Cone seal (27) from hub (23) .
29. When removal is necessary, remove bearing cone (29) from hub (23) .
Note: The component may be damaged by removal.
30. Remove lip seal (28) from hub (23) .

1. Use Tooling (A) in order to install the lip seal in hub (1). Apply clean oil to the lip of the
seal.
2. Heat bearing cone (2) to a maximum temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Install bearing cone
(2) on hub (1) .
3. Use Tooling (B) in order to install the Duo-Cone seal on hub (1) .

4. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (3). Install the bearing cups in hub (4) .
5. Use Tooling (B) in order to install the Duo-Cone seal on hub (4) .
6. Attach Tooling (C) and use a hoist in order to install hub (4) on hub (1). The hub weighs

7. Heat bearing cone (7) to a maximum temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Install bearing cone
(7) on the hub.
8. Place Tooling (D) on the bearing cone. Install retainer (5) and bolts (6). Turn the hub as you
tighten bolts (6) to a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft). Allow the bearing cone to
return to room temperature. Then, remove the retainer and Tooling (D) .
9. Install hub (8) in ring gear (10). Install retainer (8). The hub weighs approximately 22 kg
(48 lb).
10. Turn over the unit of hub (8) and of ring gear (9). Attach Tooling (E) and use a hoist in
order to install the unit in hub (4). The hub and the ring gear as a unit weigh approximately
73 kg (160 lb).

11. Insert pins (11) in the hub. Hub (7) should be positioned below the end of hub (1) .
12. Use Tooling (A) and a press in order to install ring (12) in retainer (5) .
13. Install retainer (5) and bolts (6) on the hub.
Note: The retainer must be in metal-to-metal contact with the hub.
14. Use a feeler gauge in order to measure the distance between retainer (5) and pins (11). The
correct dimension is 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.0031 ± 0.0020 inch).

15. Install the two bearings in each gear (15) .
16. Install gears (15) in planetary carrier (13) .
17. Lower the temperature of shaft (14). Align hole (X) in shaft (14) with hole (X) in planetary
carrier (12). Use a press in order to install shaft (14). Install the roll pin in hole (X) in order
to retain shaft (14) .
18. Use a hoist in order to install planetary carrier (13) on sun gear (16). The weight of

20. Install sun gear (18) and ring (19) in the hub.
21. Turn over planetary carrier (13). Attach Tooling (F) for the hoist.
22. Align the gears in planetary carrier (13) with ring gear (10) and with sun gear (18). Make
sure that sun gear (18) engages the gears in planetary carrier (13). Make sure that ring (19)
remains in the correct position.

23. Lower the temperature of the two bearing cups. Install the bearing cups in gears (22) .
24. Install gears (22) with two bearing cones in planetary carrier (20) .
25. Lower the temperature of shafts (21). Use a press in order to install the shafts in planetary
carrier (20) .
26. Turn over planetary carrier (20). Measure the distance of extension of the shafts above the
planetary carrier. See Illustration 15. The correct dimension is 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.0031 ±
0.0020 inch).
27. Install the O-ring seals on plates (23). Place plates (22) on the shafts. Install bolts (24) .
Note: The planetary shafts must be in metal-to-metal contact with the cover plates.

28. Attach Tooling (G) to planetary carrier (20) .
29. Install O-ring seals (25) and (26). O-ring seal (25) is located under the drain plug. Align the
drain holes in the planetary carrier and in the hub.
30. Install planetary carrier (20) on the hub. The planetary carrier weighs approximately 105 kg
(230 lb).
31. Install the bolts that hold the planetary carrier to the hub. Tighten the bolts to a torque of
475 ± 50 N·m (350 ± 37 lb ft). Remove Tooling (G) .
End By: Install the final drive. See the procedure in Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive -
Install" in this module.

1. Inspect the O-ring seals. Replace any seals that are worn or damaged.
2. Position an O-ring seal on the face of the steering differential.

3. Fasten a hoist with Tooling (A) to final drive (1). Adjust Tooling (A) in order to orient the
final drive to a level position. Install final drive (1) in the machine. The final drive weighs
4. Install two bolts (3) that hold the final drive to the steering differential and brake. Tighten
the two bolts to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (75 ± 15 lb ft).
5. Install 26 bolts (2) that hold the final drive to the frame. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 650
± 50 N·m (480 ± 37 lb ft). Remove Tooling (A) .
6. Apply SAE 30W oil to the threads of the bolts for the sprocket segments. Install the bolts
with the bolts with the washers against the final drive. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 300 ±
50 N·m (220 ± 37 lb ft). Then, tighten the nuts by an additional 120 degree turn. Final
torque is a minimum of 570 N·m (420 lb ft).
7. Use Tooling (B) in order to install outer axle (4) in the final drive. Make sure that the thrust
button between the inner axle and the outer axle is installed in the end of the outer axle.

8. Install retainer (6) in the sun gear.
9. Install O-ring seal (7) on cover (5). Install the cover on the final drive.
NOTICE
Several minutes are required to completely fill each final drive
compartment with oil. The oil must flow through bearings to fill the
inner compartment.

Start By:
A. Separate the track on the left side of the machine. See the procedure in Disassembly and
Assembly, "Track - Separate" in this module.
B. Remove the steering motor. Refer to the procedure in Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering
Motor - Remove" in the Service Manual for your machine.
1. Remove bolts (1). Install forcing screws in order to remove adapter (2) from the housing.
2. Remove seal ring (3) from adapter (2) .

3. Remove cover (4) with the O-ring seal from the final drive.
4. Remove retainer (5) from the sun gear.
