Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before you begin the disassembly procedure, the exterior
of the components should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the
internal mechanism. Precision components can be damaged by contaminants or by dirt. Perform
disassembly procedures on a clean work surface. Keep components covered and protected at all
times.
1. Place an alignment mark across all housings of the travel motor for assembly purposes.

Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring
pressure.
Spring force will be released when covers are removed.
Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.
2. Remove two socket head bolts (2) from head (1) that are 180 degrees from each other.
Replace these two bolts with Tooling (G). Tooling (G) will retain the brake cover when the
remaining socket head bolts (2) are removed.
3. Carefully remove the remaining socket head bolts (2) that retain head (1) in position.
Remove socket head bolts (2) evenly, in a crisscross pattern.
4. Remove Tooling (G) from head (1).

28. 1. Install new O-ring seal (6) .
2. Install Tooling (B) into two of the mounting bolt holes for travel motor (5), as shown.

3. Position a suitable lifting device on travel motor (5), as shown. Install Tooling (C). The
weight of travel motor (5) is approximately 205 kg (452 lb).
4. Carefully position travel motor (5) onto Tooling (B), as shown. Carefully push travel motor
(5) onto Tooling (B) in order to remove the suitable lifting device.

5. Remove Tooling (C). Reposition the suitable lifting device onto Tooling (A), as shown.
Carefully push travel motor (5) into the final drive. Install bolts (4) that secure travel motor
(5) to the final drive.

29. 6. Remove Tooling (B). Remove Tooling (A) .

7. Install bolts (3) .

8. Install hose coupling (1). Connect hose assemblies (2) .
9. Fill the final drive with hydraulic oil to the correct level. Refer to Operation and
Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" for the proper oil viscosity and Operation and
Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the correct amount. Refer to Operation and
Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Oil Level - Check" for the correct filling procedure.
End By: Install the counterbalance valve (travel). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
"Counterbalance Valve (Travel) - Remove and Install".

Start By:
A. Remove the final drive sprocket. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive
Sprocket - Remove and Install".
B. Remove the travel motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Travel Motor - Remove".
Note: The final drive sprocket does not need to be removed prior to removal of the final drive.
The sprocket should be removed in order to disassemble the final drive.
Note: The travel motor does not need to be removed prior to removal of the final drive. The travel
motor should be removed in order to disassemble the final drive.
Note: The procedure to remove the right hand final drive and the procedure to remove the left
hand final drive are identical. The procedure that follows is for one of the final drives.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers

31. before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Attach two suitable lifting devices to final drive (1). It may be necessary to adjust the
suitable lifting devices for correct balance of final drive (1) .
