Start By:
a. Remove the final drive and the travel motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final
Drive and Travel Motor - Remove" in this manual.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the travel motor and the final drive prior to disassembly.
2. Remove the sprocket from the final drive and the travel motor. The weight of the sprocket is
approximately 23 kg (50 lb).
3. Put an alignment mark across the section of the travel motor and the final drive for assembly
purposes. The parts must be reinstalled in the original locations of the parts.
NOTICE
Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling
that is required for the procedure could result in damage to
components.
To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure
using the recommended tools.

4. Fasten Tooling (A) and a hoist to the final drive and the travel motor (1), as shown. The
weight of the final drive and the travel motor is 118 kg (260 lb).
5. Fasten the final drive and the travel motor to Tooling (C), as shown. Drain the oil from the
final drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the final drive is
1.7 L (.5 US gal).

6. Use a 0.25 mm (.010 inch) feeler gauge to a 0.38 mm (.015 inch) feeler gauge. Remove ring
(2) from the groove between cover (4) and final drive housing (3).

5. 7. Remove the fill and drain plugs from cover (4) of the final drive. Install the bushing of
Tooling (B) in each threaded hole in the cover.
8. Fasten the puller group of Tooling (B) to each bushing, as shown. Carefully remove cover
(4) from the housing.

e. Remove the brake pilot valve and disassemble the brake pilot valve (30). Use a steel
rod with a small diameter to push down on the seat (32). Hold pressure on the seat
and remove retaining ring (31) with a seal pick. Remove seat (32), spring (33), and
valve (34) from the rear flange. Remove O-ring seal (35) from the seat.

Personal injury or death can result from not following the proper
procedures.
To avoid the possibility of injury or death, follow the established
procedure.
Note: Piston (66) must be removed from the spindle by using shop air. The piston can come
out of the spindle with force during the removal procedure. To prevent possible personal
injury, install Tooling (D), as shown. Tooling (D) will retain the piston in the spindle, when
shop air pressure is applied.

22. Fasten Tooling (D) to the spindle, as shown. Apply shop air at a pressure of 525 kPa
(75 psi) to port (65). The piston will move out of the bore in the spindle. Remove Tooling
(D) and piston (66) from the spindle.

NOTICE
In order to ensure that each piston assembly is installed into its original

barrel before removing the piston assembly.

separate from the assembly during removal or installation.

Sudden release of spring force can cause injury.
To prevent the possibility of injury, follow the procedure to relieve the
spring pressure.
Note: There is spring force against washer (77). When retaining ring (76) is removed,
the spring force will release. To prevent possible personal injury, removal of the
internal components in barrel (71) must be performed in a press. The press will retain
spring (78) and washer (77).
Note: Washer (77) and washer (79) are identical and the washers are interchangeable.

21. c. Put barrel (71) in a press. Install Tooling (E) on washer (77). Use Tooling (F) to
remove retaining ring (76). Slowly release the spring compression. Remove washer
(77), spring (78) and washer (79) from barrel (71).
