This document summarizes Julia Scheinman's internship experience developing a research study on pregnancy intention and contraceptive use among Latina women in Central Ohio. Key accomplishments included conducting a literature review on Latina fertility patterns, interpreting for Latina women receiving medical services, and securing a paid internship with Columbus Public Health. The internship confirmed Scheinman's interest in focusing on the Latino population and sexual/reproductive health field. It provided experience with research skills, cultural understanding, strategic planning, and data analysis. Scheinman plans to work at Columbus Public Health over the summer and pursue future opportunities in public health serving the Latino community.

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
PERSONAL APPLICATION
Project: Developed a research study aimed at understanding
the fertility patterns of Latina women in Central Ohio.
Key Accomplishments:
OHRI Office of Health Equity conducts research focused on
addressing the needs of diverse populations within the
community in order to reduce the burden of disease and
increase equal access to healthcare throughout Ohio.
1) Develop quantitative awareness of the multiple-scale, and
multiple interactions that characterize public health problems
Researched and reported on the existing studies covering Latina fertility
patterns, noting how these patterns interact with culture, education level,
socioeconomic status, immigration status, and family values
Wrote a literature review
2) Summarize disease prevention and intervention strategies
Helped interpret for women getting mammograms, blood glucose tests, and STI
tests
3) Seek employment within public health or related field
Applied, interviewed, and accepted a paid internship with Columbus Public
Health
Used my supervisor as a mentor and a reference
Public Health principles and Theory applied:
Levels of prevention: primary, secondary, and tertiary
Three Core Functions of Public Health: assessment, assurance, policy
I learned that I am both an self-directed and self-motivated individual. These are
two attributes that I already possessed but they became more evident throughout
this internship.
I learned that I prefer to be out in the field among the community than in an office
space. I feel energized and passionate working with groups of people or 1:1 to
provide direct support.
This internship confirmed that I want to focus on the Latino population and am
drawn to the field of sexual/reproductive health.
Knowing these things, I interviewed and procured a paid internship with Columbus
Public Health doing community outreach to teens, specifically delivering
developmentally appropriate sex education.
I will be working at Columbus Public Health this summer, assisting the Youth Wellness
Manager in coordinating the Teen Outreach Program. I am applying for full-time positions
that reflect my passion for working with the Latino community as well as my interest in
sexual/reproductive health field. I see Peace Corps service in my future as well.
