Uses
Thalidomide is used in the treatment and preven on of skin inflamma on in pa ents who have moderate to

How it works
Thalidomide belongs to a class of medica ons called immunomodulatory agents. It treats mul ple myeloma by
strengthening the immune system to fight cancer cells. It is useful in leprosy by blocking the ac on of

inflammatory substances that cause swelling and pain.
Common side effects
chills, dry skin, Lung infec on, dysaesthesia, abnormal coordina on, breathlessness, vomi ng, tremor, abnormal
sensa on in the skin, decreased blood counts, depression, bronchopneumopathy, inters al lung disease, cardiac

• Use an effec ve method of contracep on for 4 weeks before star ng treatment, during treatment, and un l 4
weeks a er stopping treatment.
• Before taking thalidomide inform your doctor if you have had a heart a ack, have ever had a blood clo ng
related disorder, or if you smoke, have high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels, have exis ng slow heart rate
(this may be symptoms of bradycardia), exis ng neuropathy i.e. ngling, abnormal co-ordina on or pain in your
hands or feet, sleepiness, a condi on called Tumor Lysis Syndrome, severe infec ons.
• Consult a doctor if you develop allergic reac on such as rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing
during thalidomide therapy.
• Avoid dona ng blood during thalidomide treatment and for 1 week a er stopping treatment.
• Do not drive or operate machinery as thalidomide may cause fa gue, dizziness, somnolence and blurred vision.
• Tell your doctor if you are or planning to become pregnant or are breas eeding.
