A woman named Ute notices Jonathan across the street at a party. He stands out from the other men in how neatly dressed and put together he looks. The narrator finds Jonathan attractive in an undefinable way and "right" for her. When Ute comments that Jonathan is coming over to them, the narrator states that he is her ride but doesn't explain their past relationship to Ute, thinking that Ute as a beautiful blonde would do well with Jonathan. When Jonathan greets them, the narrator is still affected by his voice.
