"Patriotic Sisterhood: Women and the Origins of Historic Preservation"
In Making Historic Preservation Relevant for the Next 50 Years, Donovan Rypkema noted that "the American preservation movement.... overwhelmingly owes its existence and success to the efforts of women." This program will showcase historic sites, personalities and heritage initiatives that demonstrate the powerful and visionary role of individual women and patriotic organizations (notably the Colonial Dames and the DAR) in saving some of our most beloved treasures, laying down tracks for the modern preservation movement and instilling in their families, neighbors and generation a respect for the grace and wonder of our native land. The point is to underscore that historic preservation and its allied concerns were a central platform that gave women civic and national influence in the years before they could even vote. The legacy is remarkable and a model of what the heritage enterprise should be and why it matters today.

The Great River: Three Centuries of Connecticut Valley Art & History
This program is a survey of the people, places and things that figured prominently in the cultural and artistic life of the Connecticut Valley during its first two centuries. Aspects of regional history are explored through the study gravestones, architecture, household furnishings, and regional industry. These objects illustrate the bond that linked the neighboring towns of the Connecticut Valley while offering insights into the people who owned them. The Valley's transformation from an essentially provincial and agrarian culture to the vanguard of the 19th century's high-tech industrial revolution will be discussed. The lecture revisits the themes and materials presented in The Great River (Wadsworth Atheneum), while providing further insights into the industrial transformation that occurred after 1840.

Hartford City Plan 1912 by Carrere & HastingsWilliam Hosley
realize
as a city, a character that
proud.
the intention of this report to merely study maps and plans, but rather to consider broader issues of city administration and development. Some key points:
1. Hartford already possesses many best features of an efficient and well-ordered city plan, though this is not fully appreciated.
2. With some rectifications and extensions, Hartford's plan can be vastly improved to make it one of the best and most attractive cities.
3. Citizens must realize the individual character and charm Hartford possesses as a city, and be proud of its parks, shaded streets, and lovely homes.
