Facts are an important element of any decision-making process. A fact asserts that something is the case. When we as a society make decisions that affect our future, facts, and conversation or argument about what they mean, is a critical part of those decisions.
But what is a fact, and how do we know that something is a fact? Is there a "keeper of the facts?"
This little thread is an exploration of facts: What they are, how they come to be, who has access to them and why. It's especially focused on the facts that make up the sum of our scientific knowledge.
If you enjoy this series you might also enjoy the thread where this conversation and inquiry began.

Squiggle birds is a quick exercise that you can use to get people stretching their visual thinking muscles. It takes about five minutes and quickly, clearly demonstrates how little effort is really required to make meaningful, easy-to-read images. The main point of the demonstration is that our minds are already pattern-making machines, and very little drawing is actually required to convey an idea. The mind will fill in the rest.
I learned this exercise from my friend Chris Glynn, a fine teacher who teaches fine things.
As always, your comments, thoughts and feedback are much appreciated.

What lessons can we learn from naturally occurring complex adaptive systems (cities, ant colonies, your immune system)? What practices should we take from the most responsive companies of today?
