The Sicilian Regiment in Malta by Denis Darmanin
This issue features another of Darmanin's regular articles, which requires much research. This particular concerns H.M. Sicilian Regiment which was stationed in Malta during the Napoleonic Wars, particularly at the Ospizio or the Floriana Casemate Barracks. A shorter version for local interest was featured late last year in the Sunday Times of Malta, but this version is more detailed in military matters. Unfortunately there are a couple of typos!
Darmanin been the only Maltese member of the society for over 30 years and where he contributes at least two articles annually on Anglo-Maltese military history and in many of the annual publications.

Birkirkara's big bell
The parish of Birkirkara’s big bell was made by the Barigozzi Bell foundry of Milan, and was the third to arrive at St. Helen's basilica after the first two, locally made, proved unsuccessful.
On January 17, 1932, the big bell was ceremoniously taken to the church square and placed on the basilica's parvis. Five days later, Helena, as this bell was appropriately called, was blessed by the Bishop of Malta, Mgr Maurus Caruana, and two days later it was hoisted up to its place in the church steeple. It was rung for the first time the following day - on the feast of St Paul.
