I have been with the Winston-Salem Police Department since 1997 and have been
assigned to numerous divisions within the agency during my career. I have served in the
following divisions/units within the department:
· Patrol Division (Officer)-Field Services Bureau
· Foot Patrol (Officer)-Field Services Bureau
· Patrol Division (Corporal)-Field Services Bureau
· Foot Patrol (Corporal)-Field Services Bureau
· Street Crimes Unit (Corporal)-Special Operations Division
· Use of Force Coordinator (Corporal)-Support Services Bureau
· Patrol Division (Sergeant)- Field Services Bureau
· Administrative Services (Sergeant)- Support Services Bureau
· Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) and In-Service Training Coordinator
(Sergeant)-Support Services Bureau
As an officer and corporal within the agency’s Patrol and Foot Patrol unit, I had the
opportunity to investigate a variety of calls for services from Missing Persons to
Controlled Substances Violations to Vehicle Accidents to Armed Robberies. Once
assigned to the Street Crimes Unit I had the opportunity to develop patrol strategies that
would reduce the number of offences involving weapons and controlled substances. The
unit spent numerous hours conducting surveillance, drafting and executing search
warrants, and handling particular areas within the city where criminal activity was
increasing.
While serving those units, I also served as a Field Training Officer developing
officers with the necessary skills to be self-sufficient officers who could operate on their
own on a day-to-day basis. This required meticulous documentation of the trainee’s
every action during the course of a workday and countless hours of coaching and
supervision. In 2007, I was selected to become a General Instructor with the intention of
becoming a Use of Force Instructor. In 2008, I completed the necessary requirements to
become both a General Instructor and Use of Force Instructor (Specialized Subject
Control and Arrest Technique’s Instructor). In addition to my responsibilities while I was
assigned to the Field Services Bureau and Special Operations Division, I also assisted in
teaching the agency’s BLET Academy and In-Service Training.
In 2010, I was assigned to the Training Division as the Use of Force Coordinator.
I also became a Specialized Physical Fitness Instructor and Taser Instructor. My primary
responsibilities were to develop training for mandatory In-Service Training for Use of
Force, coordinate BLET Use of Force training, develop training for conducted electrical
weapons (Taser), and oversee all of the equipment for each program. This included
developing lesson plans, PowerPoints, scheduling instructors, evaluating instructors, and
maintaining maintenance logs on all of CEW equipment. By the end of 2010, I had met
the requirements to become a Master Taser Instructor and completed the Master Taser
Instructor course.
In 2012, I was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and returned to the Patrol Division.
During this assignment, I maintained my responsibilities as an instructor and lead
instructor for all CEW training. I was assigned the task of researching and developing a
plan for the implementation of Body Worn Cameras for the agency as the agency moved
away from in-car cameras. While overseeing a patrol squad and providing coaching,
guidance, and supervision of the officers on my squad, they were also testing and
evaluating body worn cameras.
Mid 2014, I was assigned to the Administrative Services Sergeant position that
included supervising the agency’s Reserve Officer Units, Tel-Com Unit, Fleet Manager,
False Alarm Reduction Unit, and Police Chaplin Unit. I continued to work on the body
worn camera program as well as staying actively involved in the agency’s training
program for the BLET and In-Service programs. In addition to teaching Use of Force,
Physical Fitness, Taser, and In-Custody Transport, I also taught Arrest, Search, and
Seizure for the BLET program whenever the opportunity was available.
Currently, I am the BLET and In-Service Training Sergeant responsible for the
training of the agency’s BLET trainees and three full-time instructors assigned to the
training division. I still lead the Body Worn Camera training and implementation
program and the CEW training program with the agency.
