- I’d like to welcome you all here to the first Adams & Wells Industry to Educators Consortium. Lets start off today with some introductions. I’m Catherine Sondgerath and I graduated from Purdue university with a degree in engineering technology education. I had the privilege of teaching manufacturing at Bellmont High School the past year So if we could start over here we’ll just go around the room and introduce yourselves
- Just a brief overview of our schedule for today I’m going to talk a little about my project and advanced manufacturing Then we will have lunch After lunch, Carrie Anspach will guide us through a LEAN manufacturing Exercise Then we will have a presentation and tour by hoosier pattern
- Advanced Manufacturing is a term without an exact or consistent definition. When you hear the term advanced manufacturing you may think of things like machines run by computers The proponents know it when they see it but often can’t define it. The definition is not commonly agreed upon, even in the manufacturing community. This ambiguity has hamstrung communities and states hoping to develop a strategy for promoting and growing Advanced Manufacturing. So I am going to give you a few key points that will help you identify advanced manufacturing How companies manufacture – computer aided drafting/manufacturing vs manual machines High tech processes and innovation – methods of manufacturing that take operations to a level that can’t be easily replicated by competitors Skilled workforce – advanced manufacturing workers have more advanced and broader skills than their counterparts in traditional manufacturing Can’t be bought – advanced manufacturing is acquired, not bought. It results from applying new knowledge and innovation to the company’s manufacturing operations
- According to the National Association of Manufacturers there are 600,000 vacancies in the US And 38,000 of those are in NE Indiana Georgetown center projects that by 2018 there will be 7 million openings in middle skill jobs by 2018 Chrysler Demographics 75% workers 40+ Subaru average age 55

- In the 1970s you may have seen a poster like this in your high school guidance department The problem with this image is that it sends the message that if you must go to college to be successful The second image is reality. A college degree and advanced work skills are needed in advanced manufacturing
- One goal of my project is to develop a career pipeline that will prepare students for a career in Advanced Manufacturing The pathway displayed here is an outline of the classes a student should expect to take during high school By their senior year, a student would be ready to begin an internship with a local industry Electives could be filled with courses from other pathways, more shop classes or foreign language
