This document provides an overview of pediatric emergency medicine for EMT training. It covers general pediatric assessment techniques, common pediatric emergencies like respiratory issues, seizures, and more. Key points include differences in pediatric airways, treatments for conditions like foreign body airway obstruction, epiglottitis, croup, asthma and more. Normal vital sign ranges are provided by age.
This document reviews signs and symptoms of substance abuse and overdose for various classes of drugs. It provides protocols for poisoning/intoxication calls including treatment with activated charcoal, naloxone, and syrup of ipecac. Special considerations are discussed for common calls involving alcohol intoxication, illegal drug use, and intentional overdose/suicide attempts.
The document discusses common sports injuries seen in emergency medical services. It outlines that the most dangerous sport is cheerleading and common injuries include soft tissue injuries, bone injuries like fractures and dislocations, head and spinal trauma, and cardiac or respiratory issues. For treatment, it recommends controlling bleeding, not removing penetrating objects, immobilizing injuries, applying ice, and monitoring vital signs. It stresses the importance of carefully assessing patients with potential head injuries or concussions for changes in mental status.

This document discusses how business intelligence systems can support sustainability management in organizations. It argues that BI has an important role to play in helping organizations implement and monitor sustainable practices. Specifically, it focuses on the information planning phase of any BI project, which systematically defines relevant indicators and information to integrate into reporting activities. The main contribution is a conceptual model to support integrating socio-environmental indicators into organizational strategies for sustainability.

Altered mental status (AMS) refers to changes in mental state ranging from disorientation to unresponsiveness. AMS can be caused by traumatic head injury, poisoning, drug overdose, infection, shock, hypoxia, stroke, or diabetes. Signs of AMS include abnormal vital signs, unequal or sluggish pupils, abnormal skin condition, seizure activity, and irregular blood glucose levels depending on the cause. Patients exhibiting AMS fall under implied consent and must be transported to the hospital for further assessment and treatment.
Commuter information driving the conversationKirk Hazlett
This document discusses the importance of social media for communication and marketing. It notes that while traditional media is still used, social media will be the most important channel for communicating with customers within 3-5 years. The key differences today are that customers want information on their own schedule and on their mobile devices. Even seniors are adopting technologies like texting. The document advocates for brands to establish a social media presence now to be proactive rather than reactive.

This document provides an overview of musculoskeletal trauma assessment and management. It discusses that musculoskeletal injuries occur in 70-80% of blunt trauma patients but are rarely immediately life-threatening. Key points covered include evaluating for life-threatening pelvic fractures or arterial hemorrhage during the primary survey, immobilizing fractures to prevent further injury, and managing compartment syndrome, open fractures, and vascular or nerve injuries. Analgesia is recommended for patient comfort during transport and splinting.
There are three main types of cerebral vascular accidents (CVAs): ischemic, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and intracerebral hemorrhage. Ischemic strokes can be thrombotic or embolic. Signs and symptoms of a CVA can include confusion, weakness, numbness and vary depending on the part of the brain affected. It is important to recognize signs of a stroke and note the time of onset, as treatment with thrombolytics must begin within three hours for best results. Diagnostic tools include MRI, CT scans, and cerebral angiography. The cause is usually determined by CT scan and treatment depends on the type, with thrombolytics for ischemic strokes and surgery for hemorrh
This document provides an overview of topics covered in an OB/GYN continuing medical education course, including the three stages of delivery (dilation, expulsion, and placental expulsion), common pre-delivery emergencies like ectopic pregnancy and pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, signs of imminent delivery, protocols for normal and abnormal deliveries, and gynecological emergencies. Assessment includes determining if immediate care or delivery is needed and protocols are outlined for procedures like suctioning the nose/mouth and cutting the umbilical cord during delivery. Complications during delivery like prolapsed cords and breech or multiple births may require immediate transport.
Blood clotting involves platelets and coagulation factors that convert prothrombin to thrombin, binding fibrin molecules into a mesh. Antithrombin III and heparin inhibit thrombin synthesis. Vitamin K is required for factors II, VII, IX, and X. Coumadin/warfarin depresses vitamin K factors, monitored by PT/INR. PTT evaluates heparin's effect on intrinsic and common coagulation pathways. Standard heparin requires PTT testing; low molecular weight heparin has more consistent dosing without testing. Heparin induced thrombocytopenia is a serious complication of heparin therapy. Tissue plasminogen activator dissolves blood
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise boosts blood flow, releases endorphins, and promotes changes in the brain which help regulate emotions and stress levels.
