Astrology and superstitions

Superstition is an interesting phenomenon. Even today, there are people who believe that if a black
crosses your path, it brings bad luck, as well walking under a ladder and all the other mumbo-jumbo. I
mean, really – why do people believe this stuff in the 21st century. Today, science has managed to
explain many things. It is true that many remain unexplained but we know so much more today than
people even a century ago. Imagine such a scientific progress in such a short period. Anthropologists still
argue about how long ago did Homo sapiens become a separate species but most of them argue it was
between 100 and 200 thousand years ago. Let’s take 100 thousand years ago, for example. In the past
100 years we have achieved more as a species than we did in the past 100 thousand. But still there are
some beliefs left from the time when science was still young and accessible only to a few.

Most of the superstitions originate from ancient beliefs reformed in some ways during the Middle Ages.
Back then, most people were illiterate and lived their lives with the use of little information. Most of the
information was provided by the Church. Those in pursuit of knowledge beyond the common
understanding of the world described by the religious systemwere hunted. It was a hard time for
science. Since people didn’t really understand the world around them, when something atypical
happened, they deemed it unnatural, a deed of the devil or other such nonsense. Later on, when many
phenomena were explained, people’s consciousness still wasn’t cleaned from superstition. Even though
they have no actual basis in reality, superstitions still persist. Some of them might be tracked to old,
dormant instincts we have locked in our subconscious. Others have inherited the characteristics of
medieval legends or myths. Whatever the case, superstitions don’t have a place in the 21st century.

Astrology is a whole different subject. Since the dawn of man, people have looked up the sky, gazing at
its mysteries, its perfection. Soon they started developing projections between random stars because of
their reminder of certain shapes – characters in mythology, animals, etc. They started believing that
those randomly connected stars could tell the future. For thousands of years it developed alongside
astronomy. They have the same roots. Thankfully, today astronomy is a science and has nothing to do
with its roots. Anyway, astrology today still persists and there are millions of people reading their
horoscopes every day, believing it tells what their days and weeks will be like. Stars, died out billions of
years ago whose light we just now receive are somehow divided into random constellations, are
supposed to hold the key to my future? Right.
