Joshua is an 11-year-old orphan from England who is traveling alone to New Zealand in 1830. He keeps a diary of his 52-day voyage describing making friends with other boys, illnesses breaking out among passengers, and the excitement of finally spotting land after over 7 people died during the long journey. Upon arrival in New Zealand, Joshua is relieved to find work and housing with Maori people and looks forward to his new life in Christchurch.

1. The Voyage To New Zealand Hi my name is Joshua and I’m 11 years old. The year today is 1830. My parents died when I was 10. I’m poor and when I don’t have enough food, I sometimes steal it. also I come from a small village in Chelsea. ( Which is in England of course.)

5. Day 12 Dear diary, today I made a new friend. His name is Steve. He is 12 years old and he doesn’t have any parents. They died when he was 5. He told me he worked everyday and got paid 2 pounds a day so that’s how he bought a ticket.
