The appendix is a small pouch connected to the large intestine in humans and other primates. While it once had a purpose, the appendix is now considered a vestigial organ with no known function in the modern human. However, inflammation or infection of the appendix (appendicitis) remains a potentially life-threatening medical condition that often requires surgical removal of the organ.
