Frank W. Meacham was an American composer and arranger born in 1865. Though his original songs did not catch on, he gained a reputation as one of the best arrangers of ballads in America. His most famous march, American Patrol, was published in 1891 and incorporated patriotic tunes like Columbia, Gem of the Ocean, Dixie, and Yankee Doodle. The march uses a simple drum cadence to portray a band approaching and passing by a parade crowd, with the music fading away at the end. Meacham did not always receive full credit for his ghostwritten works.
