The American bison, also commonly known as the buffalo, is a large mammal native to North America. Once numbering in the tens of millions, bison nearly went extinct in the late 19th century due to mass slaughter and habitat loss. Conservation efforts have led to the population rebounding to over 350,000 animals today, with many bison now living on protected lands and on private ranches.
