Japanese farmers in the Aomori prefecture have begun an artistic tradition of carefully arranging different varieties of rice plants in their fields to create stunning large-scale images that are only visible from above. By planting purple and yellow kodaimai rice alongside green tsugaru roman rice, farmers in the village of Inakadate have produced 15,000 square meter murals depicting people, animals, and cultural icons. These temporary works of crop art last until the rice is harvested in September and can only properly be viewed from the tower of the village office.
