CURIOSITY DRIVEN SCIENCE
(in this case, the “box”
is a refrigerator!)
How do you put
a giraffe into a
refrigerator?
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX
Open the refrigerator,
put the giraffe in, and
close the door.
This question tests whether you tend to do
simple things in an overly complicated way.
The correct answer is:
How do you put
an elephant into a
refrigerator?
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX
The correct answer is:
This question tests your ability to think through
the repercussions of your actions.
Open the refrigerator,
take out the giraffe, put
the elephant in, and
close the door.
The lion king is
hosting a masquerade
party. All the animals
but one attend.
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX
Which animal does not attend?
The right answer is:
The elephant is
still in the
refrigerator.
This question tests your memory.
OK, even if you did not answer the
first three questions correctly,
you still have one more chance to
show your abilities.
There is a river you must
cross, but the sign says
“beware of crocodiles.”
What do you do?
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX
The right answer is:
You swim across safely.
All the crocodiles are
still at the party.
This question tests whether you learn quickly
from your mistakes.
According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide,
about 90% of the professionals they tested got
all questions wrong. But many preschoolers
got several correct answers.
Anderson Consulting says this conclusively
disproves the theory that most professionals
have the brains of a four year old.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!
Today we will be “thinking outside the
box” in order to understand and
explain how things work around us
that we cannot physically see!
Balloon in a bottle
• Can we blow up a balloon inside of a bottle?
• What is the balloon going to look like?
• How is the bottle going to look like?

Lets talk about puppies!
Balloon in a bottle
• What can we do to change the situation so
that we can blow up the balloon inside the
bottle?
Hot!
Cold!
What do we do when its very hot?
What do we do when it gets very cold?
What do you think “air puppies” do when it gets too hot or too cold?
How can we describe the “air puppies”
in each situation?
For your home fun you will need a cup of water and a
pipette.
Can you get water inside the pipette?
Take all that you learned today and see if you can explain
how it is that a pipette is able to hold water?
Remember to “think outside the box” and use pictures to
help you explain.
Ask your parents if they can help!
Home Fun!

Editor's Notes

  1. I was given this puzzle by a college professor friend who teaches graduates biology students. He was somewhat amazed how poorly his students do and asked me to try it out on my engineering students where I teach. Results were not so good. But what was more startling was that 3rd graders typically do better. Emphasize to the students “that you did not make up the rules. But with careful observation and free thinking you may discern them. Like with nature, we do not make the rules, but must patiently observe, often with fresh eyes. Consider telling students that like with nature, we did not make the rules for this “riddle”. Only by observing carefully and often with fresh eyes can we see the underlying pattern.” A professor back east shared this with me some time ago. Recently I came across something similar in: Outside the Box, Lateral Thinking Puzzles, Paul Sloan and Des Machale (2009)
  2. Just show/read slide and emphasize again that you are not making up the rules and that the students can’t change them. All we can do is observe and maybe think outside the box. It has been my experience that the younger the audience (middle school vs high school vs college) the better they are at discerning the ‘rules”.

  10. Just show/read slide You may want to quote Bacon (below) to reinforce the idea that we cannot impose our will on nature. “Now the empire of man over things is founded on the arts and sciences alone for nature is only to be commanded by obeying her. “ 1620 – Roger Bacon
