all questions wrong. But many preschoolers
got several correct answers.
Anderson Consulting says this conclusively
disproves the theory that most professionals
have the brains of a four year old.
15. Today we will be “thinking outside the
box” in order to understand and
explain how things work around us
that we cannot physically see!

help you explain.
Ask your parents if they can help!
Home Fun!
Editor's Notes
I was given this puzzle by a college professor friend who teaches graduates biology students. He was somewhat amazed how poorly his students do and asked me to try it out on my engineering students where I teach. Results were not so good. But what was more startling was that 3rd graders typically do better.
Emphasize to the students “that you did not make up the rules. But with careful observation and free thinking you may discern them. Like with nature, we do not make the rules, but must patiently observe, often with fresh eyes.
Consider telling students that like with nature, we did not make the rules for this “riddle”. Only by observing carefully and often with fresh eyes can we see the underlying pattern.”
A professor back east shared this with me some time ago. Recently I came across something similar in: Outside the Box, Lateral Thinking Puzzles, Paul Sloan and Des Machale (2009)
Just show/read slide and emphasize again that you are not making up the rules and that the students can’t change them. All we can do is observe and maybe think outside the box. It has been my experience that the younger the audience (middle school vs high school vs college) the better they are at discerning the ‘rules”.
Just show/read slide

You may want to quote Bacon (below) to reinforce the idea that we cannot impose our will on nature.
“Now the empire of man over things is founded on the arts and sciences alone for nature is only to be commanded by obeying her. “ 1620 – Roger Bacon
