A fighter aircraft is a military plane used to attack other aircraft, unlike bombers which target ground targets. Fighter aircraft are small and maneuverable, and have advanced tracking and weapon systems. During World War I, fighters hunted enemy reconnaissance and balloons with low-powered engines, while in World War II engine power improved as fighters played a key role in controlling the skies during attacks like the Blitzkrieg.
