Introducing energy efficiency in cambodia
With a rapid growing energy demand, a high potential for energy savings and very high energy costs, Cambodia is a world of opportunities for energy efficiency. However, the development of the sector faces many issues, from the low level of awareness to the lack of standards and regulations. Where foreign business will often use the practices of their origin country, local ones usually do not consider the efficiency issues – until they receive a higher and higher bill, and find out how and where they can save.
For 2 years now, Kamworks, a social enterprise established in Cambodia in 2006, has been helping many businesses to improve their energy efficiency, from small restaurants to 400 room hotels and 22 floors office towers. This presentation describes how Kamworks managed to steadily raise the interest of local business on energy efficiency issues, and summarizes lessons learnt from the field.
Introducing GSM-enabled Pay-As-You-Go solar in Cambodia
Kamworks is a social business in Cambodia that designs and assembles solar products locally, including PAYGO solar home systems. They have installed over 300 GSM-enabled solar home systems that allow remote monitoring and control of the systems using mobile networks. Customers can pay for the systems in installments using their mobile phones. Lessons learned include customers preferring to eventually own rather than rent systems, liking using mobile money for payments, and partnerships with organizations like microfinance institutions being important but taking time to develop. Remote monitoring of systems has been promising but control via GSM has faced challenges. Kamworks aims to accelerate sales in Cambodia and become a broader PAYGO solutions provider.

Multi-agent Control of Thermal Systems in Buildings
In buildings, the thermal functions of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and domestic hot water production are often interdependent. Additionally, it is more and more complex to control them, given the increasing use of alternative energy sources, such as solar thermal collectors or heatpumps. In this work, we propose an approach allowing to design and optimize the control of thermal systems in the buildings, while improving flexibility and reusability. Consumer, producer, distributor and environmental agents are used to represent the building and its appliances. These agents' internal models allow them to compute the energy needs, energy resources and associated costs, and take into account the specificities of the thermal systems. Following this modeling step, a distributed mechanism automatically controls the system, by combining a multi-criteria selection, a local optimization and a distributed allocation of the available resources. This approach was used to control a compact unit providing heating, ventilation and domestic hot water production in a low-energy building. The system was evaluated using a thermal simulator, and managed to improve the thermal comfort by 35% compared to the initial control system, for only a 2.5% increase in costs.

In multi-agent based simulations, providing various and consistent behaviors for the agents is an important issue to produce realistic and valid results. However, it is difficult for the simulations users to manage simultaneously these two elements, especially when the exact influence of each behaviorial parameter remains unknown. We propose in this paper a generic model designed to deal with this issue: easily generate various and consistent behaviors for the agents. The behaviors are described using a normative approach, which allows increasing the variety by introducing violations. The generation engine controls the determinism of the creation process, and a mechanism based on unsupervised learning allows managing the behaviors consistency. The model has been applied to traffic simulation with the driving simulation software used at Renault, SCANeR 2, and experimental results are presented to demonstrate its validity.
