The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), 1985 was enacted to regulate the control and usage of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in India, repealing older acts due to their inadequacies. The act establishes a licensing system, enforces strict prohibitions on the cultivation and trade of these substances, and includes penalties for violations to combat drug abuse. The National Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was established to facilitate the implementation of this act and coordinate efforts at both central and state levels.
