An Interview with Dr. H. Reg McDaniel
Rudy Revak: Dr. McDaniel, you have been a pioneer in aloe vera
and its use in nutritional support for over 25 years. Can you give us a
short summary of you background and what led you to aloe vera?
Dr. McDaniel: Much of the answer can be found in my book The
Gift: a primal provision. But I’ll try to give you a brief overview. I
received my medical degree from Texas Southwestern Medical School in
Dallas, TX. From 1975 to 1980 I was the Chief of Pathology and Clinical
Laboratories at Dallas-Ft. Worth Medical Center. During that time, I had
75 to 100 young men and women in training at the center each day who
were treating a large number of patients. Time and again we observed
toxicity or side effect of drugs that were being used to treat patients. I
have personally witnessed many tragedies as manmade poisons elevated
to the status of a prescription drug were given to already sick people.
In 1982 I founded the Fisher Institute for Medical Research. Why?
As I reflected over the past years and the many tragedies I saw I came to
realize that, that between my direct experience and the experience of all
my students, I had accumulated at least a thousand years of experience.
This experience was teaching me what is working well and what is not
in modern medicine. The Institute was formed to search for or develop
SAFE, EFFECTIVE and ECONOMICAL means for the management of
health. Because of my medical training bias, my goal still was to develop
better drugs.
In August 1985, in part because of the focus of the Fisher Institute of
Medical Research on SAFE and EFFECTIVE medicines, I was contacted
by a small company that sold only products made from Aloe vera inner
leaf gel. Major research funds had been raised to try and find a new drug
in Aloe vera gel because of some remarkable responses of a number of
people that drank their aloe beverage. This was my first introduction into
the nutritional possibilities of Aloe vera.
Rudy Revak: What health benefits are most common in your experi-
ence with aloe?
Dr. McDaniel: It’s important to note that Aloe vera has been rec-
ognized as a medicinal plant for over 5,000 years and has been used to
successfully treat a wide range of medical conditions. Aloe vera falls into
a class of compounds generally known as nutraceuticals. Nutraceuticals
rely more on their long history of successful use as herbal medicines
rather than modern clinical studies. As a result one must be very care-
ful when discussing specific health claims. Anyway the small company
mentioned above had over ten academic institutions working on research
to identify the active ingredient in Aloe and understand the mechanism(s)
of action. They wanted me to be the lone physician to coordinate the
results of this extensive experimentation with Aloe. It was discovered
that the primary active ingredient in Aloe was a very special, mannose
rich molecule that occurred in long complex chains known as polymers.
This molecule was initially called polymannose and now formally named
Acemannan. The primary building block of Acemannan, mannose, is
used in cell synthesis to make molecules in cells that conduct structure
and function activities of life that include host defense against infection,
repair, healing, homeostasis (balance among cells and organs) and all the
complex things we associate with living. In the course of these studies,
and the independent studies of others, it is now appreciated that Aloe vera
inner leaf gel preparations have many of what are considered positive

effects in laboratory studies and animal studies. Many of these effects are
directly attributed to Acemannan. Among the most important biological
effects is immunomodulation.
I should add that dietary supplements, such as Symmetry’s new
AceAloe+ product, are very important in today’s diet because many of
the naturally occurring beneficial nutrients in foods are lost because of
today’s mass processing methods. For example, when white rice and
white flour are made polymannose is removed. When adding back poly-
mannose as a dietary supplement the response was so remarkable that
parents, patients, doctors and nurses exclaimed a miracle had occurred.
I have traveled to speak to masses of people proclaiming this observed
phenomenon is not a miracle. It is, in fact, simply restoring to the food
chain a critical nutrient that is fundamental to over all wellness.
Rudy Revak: Can you tell us a little more about Acemannan and
what is unique about Symmetry’s new product AceAloe+?
Dr. McDaniel: Solubility, the ability to dissolve in water, is very
important to be able to efficiently deliver nutrients into the body. Many
of the methods used to process Aloe vera inner leaf gel leads to products
that do not dissolve well in water. As a result these products are difficult
for the body to absorb and utilize. Recently a new and unique method of
processing Aloe vera inner leaf gel to enrich and concentrate Acemannan
has been developed. For years we knew we had a problem seeking to
isolate and concentrate the Acemannan from the leaf gel that is 98.5%
water. Some batches showed zero bioactivity while others were very
potent. The initial process was to add ethyl alcohol to the leaf gel to
make the polysaccharides insoluble in water so separation could be done.
It was theorized that once Acemannan was made insoluble it could not be
efficiently resolubilized. Therefore in the final product Acemannan, for
the most part, remained insoluble and biologically dead. Operating on
this theory a totally new separation process was developed whereby steps
that made Acemannan insoluble were replaced with more gentle steps
allowing Acemannan to remain soluble. The result was Aloe preparations
that were much more potent. This was because Aloe preparations made
using this new method had higher total soluble Acemannan content, than
bioavailable Acemannan, and more immunomodulatory Acemannan than
any other Aloe preparation on the market today. This represents a signifi-
cant step forward in the quality of Aloe products.
Acemannan is the primary active ingredient in Symmetry’s new
dietary supplement AceAloe+. Quality control studies show that
AceAloe+ has the highest soluble Acemannan content, highest bioavail-
able Acemannan and the highest immunomodulatory Acemannan content
of any product currently on the market. In addition, AceAloe+ has a
unique formulation that complements and enhances the natural activities
of Acemannan.

More recently scientists have identified
Acemannan as the primary active ingredi-
ent in Aloe vera inner leaf gel. Acemannan
is a natural polysaccharide (many sugars
linked together) composed of the mono-
saccharides (individual sugars) mannose,
glucose and galactose in a 3:1:1 ratio.
The monosaccharides are joined together
using β-(1-4) linkages. Some mannose
and galactose sugars are modified with
O-acetyl groups. As a polysaccharide
Acemannan is much longer than it is wide
and thus can be thought of as a long strings
of variable length. One way to compare relative lengths among individu-
al Acemannan molecules is to compare molecular weights. The average
size of Acemannan is thought to be about 2 million Daltons (Da) but
there is a wide range of sizes above and below 2 million Da. Studies
have shown that biological and medicinal activity of Acemannan is con-
trolled, in part, by the length of the Acemannan molecule. For example,

Some specific examples of ancient
medicinal uses include arthritis, acne,
dermatitis, headache, high blood
pressure, indigestion, rheumatoid
arthritis, peptic ulcers, psoriasis
and burns.

the optimal size range for immunomodulatory activity is between 5,000
Da and 400,000 Da. Acemannan preparations with average molecular
weight above or below this range do not have significant immunomodu-
latory activity.
Preparation of Acemannan is difficult and can sometimes lead to
preparations that have low Acemannan content or inactive Acemannan.
This has resulted in variable activity of Acemannan preparations ranging
from no activity at all to very active. This has sometimes led to contra-
dictory results in scientific studies. The study of Acemannan chemistry
has led to improved methods for purification of Acemannan resulting in
preparations with higher and more consistent Acemannan content and
activity.
Modern scientific studies using active Acemannan preparations have
confirmed many beneficial medical activities of Acemannan and have
provided insight into the underlying mechanisms of action of Acemannan.
In laboratory studies Acemannan preparations have been shown to have
many positive activities associated with increased immune function and
wound healing. These include activation of important immune cells
such as macrophages, dendritic cells, natural killer cells, and cytotoxic
T-cells and increased the production of important immune cytokines
such as TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6 and interferon’s. Acemannan preparations
have also been shown to stimulate the production of cytokines known
to be important for wound healing such as Fibroblast Growth Factor
(FGF), Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), Keratinocyte Growth
Factor-1 (KGF-1), and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF).
Acemannan preparations also stimulates the growth fibroblasts, which
are the first structural cells to move into a wound site. Fibroblast secret
Type-1 Collagen which forms the initial matrix that starts to fill in
wounds. Molecular studies have shown that Acemannan preparations
stimulate the release of important enzymes by keratinocytes that remodel
the wound site.
With the increasing understanding of the safety and medical benefits
of Acemannan preparations, Acemannan has received formal approval
by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) as safe and effective medications
in certain human and veterinary applications. For example, in March
2000 the FDA granted formal approval of an Acemannan Hydrogel
wound dressing for management of postsurgical incisions, first and
second degree burn, arterial and venous stasis ulcers, pressure ulcers and
foot ulcers. The FDA has also approved an Acemannan oral hydrogel
formulation for treatment of aphthous ulcers, herpetic lesions of the oral
cavity and tooth extraction sites. In August 2000 USDA granted full
approval of an Acemannan immunostimulant as a biologic drug for treat-
ment of certain cancers in cats thought to be cause feline leukemia virus
(FeLV) a relative of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Weekly Rapid Income
Everyone wants to get paid now and Symmetry agrees. We pay every
single week and it’s not just based on personal efforts. Everytime you
personally introduce someone to the business you earn 25% of their pur-
chase, but it doesn’t stop there. You can continue to earn another 10%
based on your personal enrollee new business, plus another 10%’s on

Residual Income
This is income that comes every month based on your repeat business.

I first met Symmetry’s President and Founder, Mr. Rudy Revak because of Aloe Vera. Really! It was back
in the late 1980’s and Rudy was looking for someone with knowledge of Aloe. My name came up from
several sources and Rudy and I have been together ever since. So Rudy and I both have a respect and
love of Aloe that goes back over several decades.

While Aloe Vera has a history of use,
medicinally, that goes back 3,000 to 5,000
years in both the Western world and the
Eastern (as a Traditional Chinese Herb) it has
