Auli whose thrilling slopes are well known among skiing lovers is one most
visited place by international ski lovers to get the taste of this majestic
adventure sports in the foothills of the mighty Indian Himalayas is nestled in
Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
Auli is a lesser known hill station compared to their counterparts - Shimla,
Gulmarg and Manali. He won fame in the tourist map of India only after the
formation of Uttarakhand in 2000. Its tilted valleys are training ground for
paramilitary forces and India Indo-Tibetan Police Force Border. This thrilling
places is well known throughout the world for its verdant white snow
covered valleys and majestic valleys that looks like a painting from where
you can get clear view of picks like Trishul, Nanda Devi, Kamet, Mana
Parvat, Beethartoli, Nilkanth, Hathi Parbat, Ghori Parbat and Dunagiri.
The word Auli means "Bugyal" meaning meadow in the regional language.
Hindi and English are the languages spoken here. In its early days it was a
major trading center. The trails were crossed frequently by semi-nomadic
tribes who were called as Bhotiya trade with Tibet for centuries. It is said
that Guru Adi Shankaracharya who visited here in the 18th century built a
learning center which can be still be found here and which is known widely
known as Sankaracharya Tapastali.
Although this majestic place is a lesser known hill station, has gained
importance as a ski resort and a winter resort. Auli hosted ski festivals since
1986. Since its starting day national Auli skiingchampionships is held
every year under the Federation of the Winter Games of India during the
February to March. For adventure lovers, especially skiers, late November
to March is the ideal time to visit Auli. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam
Limited (GMVNL), a government agency responsible for maintenance of the
ski resort, offers courses for beginners and professionals in here, to be held
during 7-14 days between December and March. But one thing that you
need to keep in mind is that you must carry your own warm clothes and
skiing clothes as well if you want to participate heavy woollens, gloves, wind
cheaters, snow jackets, snow boots, etc. are necessary.
Its snow enclosed slopes are as long as 10-20 km which best for skiing.
Those not on the slopes you can opt for the cable car costs around Rs 200
(free for children under 5) and operates 8:00 a.m.-5: 00 pm (November to
April). Not only known as winter sports destination but also as a pilgrimage
center also. Some of the most popular holy places to visit here are Narsimh
Tapastali Sankaracharya Mandir and Joshimath, Nandaprayag, Rudraprayag
and Badrinath Mandir Pandukeshwar. This majestic picturesque hill station is
well connected to all key destinations in Uttarakhand by all weather roads
from major cities like Joshimath, Rishikesh, Pauri, Nandaprayag,
Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Ukhimath, Chamoli, Srinagar, etc.
Jolly Grant, which is located near Dehradun, the closest airport is 280
kilometers. Rishikesh railway station is 264 km, serves as the adjacent train
station to Auli. Taxis and buses are obtainable to reach here from Rishikesh.
Tourists can opt for buses or trams to travel around Auli. Taxis can be hired
from other cities and travel in here. When you here you can also go for
trekking in Valley of Flowers as well which is one of the dream destination
for all trekkers of the world.
