Osteomyelitis of the jaws is an inflammation of the bone marrow in the maxilla or mandible caused by infection, often presenting with severe pain, swelling, and fever. It can be classified into acute and chronic forms, dependent on duration and presence of pus, and is notably more common in the mandible due to its poorer blood supply. Treatment involves a combination of surgical intervention, such as debridement, and antibiotic therapy, with hyperbaric oxygen therapy being a notable adjunct for refractory cases.
