There are approximately 615 squirrel species worldwide, with over 200 species found in North and South America. Squirrels can be divided into three main groups - tree squirrels, ground squirrels, and flying squirrels. They inhabit forests, woodlands, parks and residential areas where they build nests and store food to survive the winter months.
