C. Forms of Courtesy
Salute – is the most important and most common form of military courtesy.
Salute is practice in all military organization in the world as a sign of honor and
respect. The manner on how an individual executes the salute is a reflection of
his attitude towards his duties as military man. When you salute or return
smartly, it indicates that you are proud of yourself and the organization you
belong.
Rules in Rendering and Executing a Salute
1. The saluting distance is the distance of recognition and does
not usually exceed thirty (30) paces. Normally, the salute is rendered when
the person to be saluted is about six (6) paces.
2. Salute must always be returned by the Officer entitled to salute unless he
is in formation with other officers. In this case, only the marcher or the most
senior returns the salute.
3. The salute must be rendered at a halt or at walk. However, if an individual
is running, he must come first to walk before saluting and continue running.
4. When several soldiers in a group, in outdoor not in formation, everybody
must rise and salute. When indoor, only the commander or most senior
salutes.
5. The salute must never be rendered with a pipe, cigarette in the right hand
or in the mouth.
6. Salute is rendered whether a headgear is worn or not.
7. Salute must be rendered whether when asking permission to converse to
an officer. After the conversation he again salute the officer when he leaves.
8. Unlike in Navy personnel, army never salutes with the left hand. When the
right hand is holding something, you may transfer it in the left hand before
saluting. When both hands are full of articles never mind saluting just greet
the officer.
9. Enlisted Personnel salute other enlisted personnel only when rendering
reports during formation.
10. When in doubt whether the person to be saluted is entitled to it, always
render salute.
When to Salute
a. When meeting an officer whether both of you are in uniform and
whether one of you is not in uniform inside military camps. Normally, salute is
rendered three (3) times a day when meeting an officer excluding the salute
rendered when reporting. Salute is normally rendered once in the morning, in
the noontime and in the afternoon.
b. When reporting to an officer.
c. Salute is rendered during military honors.
d. During flag ceremonies where the national anthem is being played.
e. Raising and lowering of flag.
f. To salute all officers and colors standard not cased.
g. After conversing with an officer.
When not to Salute
a. When meeting military officers outside the camp or in any public
places.
b. Indoors, except when reporting to an officer.
c. When attending to a vehicle.
d. When entering churches or any divine places.
e. When an individual is engaged in athletic activities.
f. When meeting a prisoner.
g. When troops are at work.
h. When carrying articles with both hands and being so occupied to
make saluting impracticable.
i. When in ranks.
Persons Entitled to the Salute
1. Commissioned Officer both male and female of the Armed Forces of
the Philippines
2. Commissioned Officer both male and female of the Armed Forces of
Allied Nations.
3. Civilian Officials or Foreign Dignitaries during military honor
rendered to them.
Military Protocols
1. Avoid undue familiarity with your senior NCO and Officers. As much as
possible there should be always a gap between junior and seniors whether
enlisted men or officers.
2. Never enter an officer’s club even with the invitations of missed informed
Officer. Tactfully refuse the invitations; in the same manner officers should not
hang around NCO clubs.
3. When walking with a senior, the junior always walks on his left side and
keep step with the senior half step behind.
4. In entering any conveyances, the senior has all the priority to enter first and
disembark ahead respectively.
5. When officers are walking on the way and you want to go ahead of him,
salute and ask permission to go ahead by saying “permission to go ahead Sir”.
You may precede when he return your salute and say “permission granted” or
simply “carry on”.
6. When conversing to an officer, always make use of the word “Sir” before or
after the statement. The junior could also speak to the senior in the third
person to show respect.
7. When the senior speaks to the junior, he must address them by their proper
titles and contemporaries in their first name but never with the seniors.
8. Whenever the national anthem is played, come to attention, face the flag,
and render a salute. When no flag is near during the playing of the anthem,
face the source of the music and salute. Vehicle in motion must stop. Persons
aboard the vehicle need to disembark. Only the driver will disembark, stand
beside the door of the vehicle and salute. The same manner is also rendered
in respect to the flag and national anthem of other friendly countries.
9. Whenever reporting to new units, whether in garrison or in the field, it is
necessary for you to make a Courtesy Call to your immediate commander. If
you are an NCO, you should also call on your Company First Sergeant and
Battalion Sergeant Major
Identification of Rank Insignias in the AFP

discipline, three basic discipline observed during military operations, forms
of courtesy, rules in rendering/executing a salute, when and when not to
salute, persons entitled to the salute and military protocols. I hope that
you have fully understood our topic. By the way do you have any question
or clarifications? If there is none, that ends our subject for today. Good
luck and prepare for an examination next meeting.
VI. ACTIVITY: (To be pass on next Saturday.)
Read the following questions and be prepared to justify your own answers.
Write your answers in a long bond paper.
1. During the training, the cadets exhibit the act of politeness, civility, and
respect. They avoid undue familiarity with their seniors. They gave their seniors
priority in any conveyance. They use "sir" or "ma'am" when addressing their
seniors. What could be the behavior expressed in this circumstance?
2. Every time there are tasks given by the officer, the cadets were responsive to
do it. They do the task in order, with initiative, and with time management. They
comply with regulations and give obedience to the personnel in a military
organization. What aspect does the cadet follow in the given below?
3. Devone is a cadet who possesses vulgar personality, always making
excuses, and uses profanity. One early morning in the formation, an officer
called her to take command and it is to talk to Mrs. Wilson about the sound
system. But Devone being scared to Mrs. Wilson just say " Sorry, but I don't
think Mrs. Wilson is in the mood today Sir, maybe you could personally go to
her since she likes boys and you're handsome Sir". In this situation, we can say
that Devone's behavior falls under ______?
4. After the last announcement in the field, the leaders dismissed each squad.
Excited to go home, one of the cadets ride the same transportation with an
officer. An unaware of how to behave in front of him, she renders a salute and
smile at him. Do you think it is best to salute when an officer is attending a
vehicle? Why? Why not?
5. The field is for the Commander to instill a love of learning the basic rules and
norms in the military ROTC. He arrived early before one comes to the campus.
He set himself as an example. He took the responsibility of teaching them the
basic execution, and practice on how to make it better. He taught them
teamwork as they perform the basics. He never stops until they do it united and
also gave them break time when the cadets are in need of it. What importance
of military discipline is indicated?
6. Today is a schedule for learning the basics about Wooden Mockup riffle. The
commander of Sheila‟s company taught her to always have MCD and instructed
her the execution she must do. Later, a few minutes is given for break time,
allowing the Charlie Company to drink water and rest for a while. However, when
in break time, some of Sheila‟s buddies are busy playing on the riffle which she
thinks is not the right thing to do for she remembers the rules about it. If you were
Sheila, how should you correct them by applying the MCD taught a while ago?
7. Whenever there are tasks to fulfill, the cadets are advised to attain "teamwork".
The cadets then followed their leader's command. They put their responsibility to
accomplish the proper way of executing the basics. They ensure the task
efficiently and in orderly action. And they apply a sense of obligation in the task
and in time for it is part of the training. Why do you think "TEAMWORK" is
necessary for the military discipline of ROTC? Expound your answer.
8. In the field, you were told, many times, to demonstrate respect and observe
morale and discipline toward your Officers. One time, you come very early for
your NSTP subject. While scrolling on your phone, you saw one of your officers
coming at the entrance of the gate of the campus. As a cadet, you need to
respect your Officers. How would you execute the common form of military
courtesy and discipline? In the given space below, arrange the following
according to the proper way of MCD.
-Keep a distance of six steps
-Greet him with a salute
-Keep a distance of three steps
-Run toward him 5. Greet "Sir good morning sir"
-Let him come near
9. Today is your ROTC NSTP. And your Officers decided to have a class
discussion because it's raining outside. During the meeting, the officer asked
you for an answer to a particular question. What would you do, to execute the
MCD, as you answer the question?
It is a must to a Filipino citizen to respect the national anthem and the flag itself.
Early in the morning, as you are walking on the street, you suddenly heard the
national anthem being played. Reminded by the discussion about MCD, how
are you going to apply that military courtesy in this situation?
10. It is a must to a Filipino citizen to respect the national anthem and the flag
itself. Early in the morning, as you are walking on the street, you suddenly heard
the national anthem being played. Reminded by the discussion about MCD, how
are you going to apply that military courtesy in this situation?
11. Its Sunday! Your mother asked of you to buy the lists of groceries she handed
before washing the basket of clothes. As you enter the store, you saw,
unexpectedly, one of your officers doing his groceries too. How would you behave
in this kind of situation still applying the MCD taught in the school?
12. The Officers respected their seniors. They inquire permission when asking
and when answering. Instead of making excuses, they make progress. They
refuse to complain. They do not wait for things to happen---They make things
happen. They take their initiative. What could be the behavior does the Officers
implied as they think, plan, and act decisively?
13. There are ways on how to apply MCD in the field. For example, one cadet saw
his senior coming from the entrance of the gate. He runs faster as he can towards
him, he keeps a distance of 6 steps and greeted him with a salute. Every training
they do this practice. Why do you think they are taught to do this?
14. John runs faster as he can when an Officer called him to do a task. The task is
to count all of the present cadets in today's meeting for their attendance. John
accomplishes the task by asking all the assigned platoon leaders of each
company. When John finished the task, he's getting nervous because he doesn't
know how to report applying the MCD taught in them. If you were in John‟s shoe,
how could you report appropriately?
15. Mike wants to do his best in his ROTC NSTP. He dreams to become a soldier.
Every time the officer gave a task on them, he diligently follows and obeys. Doing
it with no errors. He acts politely. He addresses his seniors by "sir" or "ma'am". He
never complains, take initiative, and do things properly. He knows when and when
not to salute. He studies everything that needs to be studied. And he arrives on
time every call time. He is an example for everyone. Where do you think this
attitude of Mike falls under?

  • 15. VI. ACTIVITY: (To be pass on next Saturday.) Read the following questions and be prepared to justify your own answers. Write your answers in a long bond paper. 1. During the training, the cadets exhibit the act of politeness, civility, and respect. They avoid undue familiarity with their seniors. They gave their seniors priority in any conveyance. They use "sir" or "ma'am" when addressing their seniors. What could be the behavior expressed in this circumstance? 2. One early morning in the formation, an officer called her to take command and it is to talk to Mrs. Wilson about the sound system. But Devone being scared to Mrs. Wilson just say " Sorry, but I don't think Mrs. Wilson is in the mood today Sir, maybe you could personally go to her since she likes boys and you're handsome Sir". In this situation, we can say that Devone's behavior falls under ______? 4. After the last announcement in the field, the leaders dismissed each squad. Excited to go home, one of the cadets ride the same transportation with an officer. An unaware of how to behave in front of him, she renders a salute and smile at him. Do you think it is best to salute when an officer is attending a vehicle? Why? Why not? 5. The field is for the Commander to instill a love of learning the basic rules and norms in the military ROTC. He arrived early before one comes to the campus. He set himself as an example. He took the responsibility of teaching them the basic execution, and practice on how to make it better. He taught them teamwork as they perform the basics. He never stops until they do it united and also gave them break time when the cadets are in need of it. What importance of military discipline is indicated?
  • 17. 6. Today is a schedule for learning the basics about Wooden Mockup riffle. The commander of Sheila‟s company taught her to always have MCD and instructed her the execution she must do. Later, a few minutes is given for break time, allowing the Charlie Company to drink water and rest for a while. However, when in break time, some of Sheila‟s buddies are busy playing on the riffle which she thinks is not the right thing to do for she remembers the rules about it. If you were Sheila, how should you correct them by applying the MCD taught a while ago? 7. Whenever there are tasks to fulfill, the cadets are advised to attain "teamwork". The cadets then followed their leader's command. They put their responsibility to accomplish the proper way of executing the basics. They ensure the task efficiently and in orderly action. And they apply a sense of obligation in the task and in time for it is part of the training. Why do you think "TEAMWORK" is necessary for the military discipline of ROTC? Expound your answer.
  • 18. 8. In the field, you were told, many times, to demonstrate respect and observe morale and discipline toward your Officers. One time, you come very early for your NSTP subject. While scrolling on your phone, you saw one of your officers coming at the entrance of the gate of the campus. As a cadet, you need to respect your Officers. How would you execute the common form of military courtesy and discipline? In the given space below, arrange the following according to the proper way of MCD. -Keep a distance of six steps -Greet him with a salute -Keep a distance of three steps -Run toward him 5. Greet "Sir good morning sir" -Let him come near 9. Today is your ROTC NSTP. And your Officers decided to have a class discussion because it's raining outside. During the meeting, the officer asked you for an answer to a particular question. What would you do, to execute the MCD, as you answer the question? It is a must to a Filipino citizen to respect the national anthem and the flag itself. Early in the morning, as you are walking on the street, you suddenly heard the national anthem being played. Reminded by the discussion about MCD, how are you going to apply that military courtesy in this situation?
  • 19. 10. It is a must to a Filipino citizen to respect the national anthem and the flag itself. Early in the morning, as you are walking on the street, you suddenly heard the national anthem being played. Reminded by the discussion about MCD, how are you going to apply that military courtesy in this situation? 11. Its Sunday! Your mother asked of you to buy the lists of groceries she handed before washing the basket of clothes. As you enter the store, you saw, unexpectedly, one of your officers doing his groceries too. How would you behave in this kind of situation still applying the MCD taught in the school? 12. The Officers respected their seniors. They inquire permission when asking and when answering. Instead of making excuses, they make progress. They refuse to complain. They do not wait for things to happen---They make things happen. They take their initiative. What could be the behavior does the Officers implied as they think, plan, and act decisively?
  • 20. 13. There are ways on how to apply MCD in the field. For example, one cadet saw his senior coming from the entrance of the gate. He runs faster as he can towards him, he keeps a distance of 6 steps and greeted him with a salute. Every training they do this practice. Why do you think they are taught to do this? 14. John runs faster as he can when an Officer called him to do a task. The task is to count all of the present cadets in today's meeting for their attendance. John accomplishes the task by asking all the assigned platoon leaders of each company. When John finished the task, he's getting nervous because he doesn't know how to report applying the MCD taught in them. If you were in John‟s shoe, how could you report appropriately? 15. Mike wants to do his best in his ROTC NSTP. He dreams to become a soldier. Every time the officer gave a task on them, he diligently follows and obeys. Doing it with no errors. He acts politely. He addresses his seniors by "sir" or "ma'am". He never complains, take initiative, and do things properly. He knows when and when not to salute. He studies everything that needs to be studied. And he arrives on time every call time. He is an example for everyone. Where do you think this attitude of Mike falls under?
