The number of orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra has decreased rapidly over the past 20 years, critically endangering the species. Habitat loss, illegal hunting, the pet trade, deforestation including for palm oil and logging, and fires caused by drought are responsible. WWF Indonesia works to conserve orangutans by using donations to fund food, shelter, and conservation programs, educating people, and encouraging practices like reducing paper use. Saving orangutans benefits both WWF by funding their work, and society by maintaining the ecosystem and producing more oxygen from trees.
