RESUMEN
En el presente artículo se reflexiona sobre la respuesta educativa en alumnos y alumnas con
retraso mental con necesidades de apoyo generalizado. Partiendo de la base de que toda
persona puede progresar si se le ofrece el apoyo adecuado se proponen una serie de ideas que
potencien una escuela de calidad y para la calidad de vida de su alumnado: la necesidad de
construir contextos capaces de ser compartidos por todas las personas con independencia de
su capacidad; la consideración del alumno como actor-agente en la construcción de su
desarrollo, y no como sujeto pasivo; la esencia social-emocional de la inteligencia humana;
y la relevancia y potencia educadora de contextos informales de aprendizaje. Además, se
proponen una serie de implicaciones educativas: dar especial énfasis a la enseñanza de las
habilidades sociales y de comunicación y habilidades de autodirección; y diseñar entornos
educativamente significativos. Finalmente se plantea que en la escuela se ha de desarrollar la
cultura de la mejora continua, de la participación real de los distintos integrantes de la
comunidad educativa, del compromiso real y permanente con el progreso en la calidad de
vida de sus alumnos.
