An optic made of PMMA polymer collects and distributes light uniformly from a flat LED using a central refractive surface and total internal reflection within the optic. The freeform optical surfaces are also non-rotationally symmetric to match the asymmetric LED design and achieve high uniform illumination.
1. iLED LENS Technology
An optic made of the polymer PMMA and optimized via composite ray mapping collects light from a flat
white-light LED, producing a uniform square floodlit illumination field. Light rays emitted from the LED at
low angles relative to the optical axis are collected by a central refractive surface, while high-angle rays are
reflected via total internal reflection (TIR) within the optic. Because the LED and its light emission are both
no rotationally symmetric, the freeform optical surfaces also must be no rotationally symmetric to achieve
high uniformity.
