Femicide is defined as the killing of women by men, often within a domestic relationship, and is linked to the unequal power dynamics between men and women. In Costa Rica, 70% of homicides are related to gender factors, and between 1997 and 2009 there were at least 21 femicides. While Costa Rican law recognizes femicide committed by husbands or partners, it does not include killings by ex-partners or other men with family ties to the victims. Experts emphasize the need for prevention through education to end patriarchal norms and violence as an acceptable means of resolving personal problems.
