Rice is the third most produced cereal globally after sugarcane and maize. Most rice is produced in Asia, with India being the second largest producer, accounting for 20% of global production. The top rice producing states in India are West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Bihar. There are different varieties and methods of cultivation depending on factors like climate and soil conditions. Proper water, weed, pest and disease management is required to maximize yields, which average 60-70 quintals per hectare for mid-duration varieties in India. Rice will remain a critical crop as the world population grows and water availability challenges increase.
