This thesis develops new direct search methods for solving nonlinear integer programming problems. It extends previous work by Murtagh on using direct search to find integer-feasible solutions. The new methods differ significantly from Murtagh's original approach in the heuristics used and steps of the procedures. The methods are implemented in a modified version of Murtagh's MINTO code, which allows both automatic and interactive solution approaches. Computational results are presented for various test problems, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new direct search methods. A large-scale network optimization model is also solved, showing the methods can handle practical problems of industrial size.
