Scott Sowle
Founder and CEO
Opened in 2013, Muir Wood was designed from the ground up and is the culmination of Founder &
CEO Scott Sowle’s personal and professional experiences. Scott worked closely for over three
decades with mental health and substance use disorder programs and became an advocate for the
underserved. He saw the need for a program dedicated to teens and families in northern California
and in 2013 founded Muir Wood Adolescent and Family Services. Today, Muir Wood is among the
highest quality specialized teen treatment providers of its kind.

13. COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENTS
Muir Wood uses the Child and Adolescent Service Intensity Instrument (CASII) and
American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria to assess and provide appropriate
care to each prospective client. Clients entering the program receive thorough
biopsychosocial assessments, psychiatric evaluations, and neurological testing (when
indicated) to identify conditions, make accurate diagnoses, and inform comprehensive
care plans.

Muir Wood has full-time experienced and highly credentialed medical doctors
and nurses who help teens overcome their substance use and co-occurring
mental health disorders. Our team of medical professionals includes
Dr. David E. Smith, a luminary and national leader in addiction medicine and

Individual and group therapy sessions at Muir Wood are designed to help teens at
their specific developmental stages. We normalize the intensity and turmoil typical
for this life stage while reviewing the impact of the choices they have made.
Individual psychotherapy sessions conducted by our talented staff of licensed
primary therapists help Muir Wood clients navigate questions of identity and role.
We combine techniques that include motivational interviewing, cognitive
behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based
practices, and other evidence-based modalities.

16. WASC-ACCREDITED ACADEMICS
In addition to ensuring the behavioral well-being of teens, we ensure that all Muir Wood
clients receive robust academic support to help them prepare for their futures. The on-site
Muir Wood Learning Centers are year-round supplemental, multi-course programs that
clients attend Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The Learning Centers are
staffed with Masters-level, state of California credentialed teachers and are accredited by
the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

individual and group therapy, structured academics, and family involvement. Muir Wood

Muir Wood clients are supervised in the use of on-campus fitness equipment and facilities
as they develop well-rounded fitness routines that contribute to overall health and
positive self-image. Campuses may feature multiple playing fields, lighted basketball

The Family Program at Muir Wood is recognized as one of the most comprehensive
programs of its kind nationally. Programming includes weekly individual family therapy
sessions with licensed therapists, multi-family process groups, evening family

20. 16-WEEK PARENT AFTERCARE SUPPORT
OFFERED AT NO ADDITIONAL COST
Led by Rawland Glass, MSW, LCSW, a past recipient of the Addiction Professional
Outstanding Clinician Award, our once-weekly, 75-minute online parent support
program allows for an ongoing discussion of potential challenges. The program helps
identify strategies for dealing with, and responding to, specific dynamics within the
family, emphasizing the use of tools developed while in residential treatment to manage
relationships and emotions. We also facilitate the exploration of conflicts and
identification of solutions in order to provide the support parents need to remain on
track with their family’s individualized aftercare plan.

21. OUTPATIENT SERVICES
Certified by the California Department of Healthcare Services (DHCS), and accredited by
the Joint Commission, this 5-day-per-week outpatient program consists of 3-days-per-
week of process groups and educational sessions, along with individual and family therapy
the remaining 2-days-per-week. This level of care is designed to be a 12-week program
but can be tailored to the unique needs of each family and teen. On select evenings and
weekends, Muir Wood’s outpatient program will also serve as a learning center for
families, with presentations facilitated by behavioral health specialists aimed at educating
and empowering families and the local community. All outpatient programming is
overseen by Heather Russo, LMFT, Vice President of Outpatient Services.
