1. A DETAILED REPORT ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE(EPL) 2018/2019

2. INTRODUCTION:
This report examines the English Premier League for the Period 2018/ 2019. The English
PL, also recognized as the Premiership, forms the top tier of England’s professional football
structure. It is regarded as the most-watched sports league in the world, broadcasted in
212 territories and with a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people.
GOAL:
To strategically examine the 2018/2019 EPL dataset and uncover the ability to discover
the relationship between different features of the football match and the teams
performance.
OBJECTIVES:
 To identify and prioritize diverse attributes which makes more impact on team
performances at the 2018/2019 EPL Season.
 Identifying and Understanding the current state of the teams.
OVERVIEW:
The data analysed was based on all 760 English Premier League matches played during
2018/2019 season. Of the 760 matches played, it was observed that 41% matches were
won, 19% matches Loss and 40% matches draw. Twenty (20) teams competed in the
Premier League during the 2018/ 2019 season. A total number of 38 matches were
distinctively played by every 20 teams and 1,072 goals scored.
In examining the categories, it was observed that two teams qualified to represent the
league in Champions league, one team qualified for Europa League, three teams relegated
to lower Division while 10 teams did not qualify for any UEFA competitions
Our analysis revealed that Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea topped the league
coming- 1st, 2nd and 3rd Position respectively with 98points, 97points and 72points each.
Manchester City topped the league for this season in which they won 32 matches, lost 4
matches and had a draw in only 2 matches out of the 38 matches. Followed closely by
Liverpool who won 30 matches in total. The bottom (3) three teams are Cardiff, Fulham
and Huddersfield 18th, 19th and 20th Position respectively. Southampton recorded the
highest number of draw (12) games in this season. In addition to that, it was noted that
Southampton and Huddersfield both played matches with draw greater than their wins.
That is, their draw games exceeded the matches won.
In terms of Revenue, this season generated €2billion TV Revenue, €8billion market value
and an average TV Revenue of €122.80million with 10 teams (generating TV revenue
above the average value through live telecast.
The analysis indicates that Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham generated
€151million, €150million, €146million respectively via live match telecast. This is
unsurprising as the teams had the highest number of their games televised during the
season. Coming in the bottom three are Huddersfield, Fulham and Cardiff which generated
€97million, €102million and €103million respectively.
Furthermore, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United
account for 30% of the collective annual revenue of all 20 teams in the division. We also

3. found that the ‘No UEFA competitions’ category accounted for over €1.15bn closely
followed by Champions league category with over €0.30billion and the least category is
the Europa League with revenue of €0.13billion.These positive gross revenues from ‘No
UEFA competitions’ and Champions League and FA Cup act as a direct economic stimulus
for the EPL. However, with lesser popularity of the other categories, the opportunities for
value creation become less strategically profiting as a resource for EPL to leverage.
In terms of attacks analysis, it was observed that there is no substantial difference in the
accurate passes among teams. Though Manchester City has the highest number of attacks
passes this season with 26,586 attack passes and Cardiff has the least attack passes with
10,226 attack passes. Manchester City also played the highest number of shots, with 260
on target out of which 37% of it was converted to a goal.
Furthermore, the analysis identified three (3) teams which recorded the highest number
of yellow cards given- Watford, Burnley, Manchester United which all had 77, 75 and 73
yellow cards respectively. Also, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea all had the least
yellow cards (38,44, 49 respectively) recorded for this season. Leicester got 5 red cards
which are the highest recorded for this season. Surprisingly this did not affect the team’s
performance as it still came 9th Position. Chelsea club, however, did not receive any red
card for this season.
In analysing the goal difference, it was observed that Manchester City and Liverpool both
had the highest goal difference with 72 and 67 goal difference and as expected came 1st
and 2nd Position in the League. However, Chelsea with 24 goal difference came 3rd
position while Tottenham with 28 goal difference came 4th position.
Recommendations:
 Cardiff and Burnley should endeavour to work more on their attack passes to
further strengthen their goal performance.
 Teams Management/ Coaches should ensure adequate trainings are done especially
by team players and goalkeepers who are in the bottom ladder of the league in
order to achieve better performance in the next season.
 In terms of Revenue, the least revenue-generating teams should focus on
strategies driving brand development, commercial revenue, broadcasting revenue
and overall popularity and positioning of the teams globally.
