Why It Works
Discovery Dating helps people make healthy decisions about harmful and risk-taking behaviors by increasing pro- tective factors and reducing risk factors.
The Discovery Dating curriculum stimulates change in participants using the Theory of Personal Agency. Personal agency is about both a participant’s belief in one’s ability to do something (self-efficacy) and the belief one has the control to accomplish it (self-regulation.) People with increased self-efficacy are more resilient to new challenges and better able to solve problems. They are less like- ly to repeat oppressive behaviors and therefore, more likely to participate in healthy relationships. A 2010-11 study found that Discovery Dating stu- dent participants significantly increased their personal agency by 12% according to their pre- and post-Discovery Dating test scores.
In a Journal of Family Social Work article, Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention in a Rural Native Community (Hagen, Skenandore, Scow, Schanen & Clary, 2012) Discovery Dating was evaluated from 2002 to 2005. The 157 Dis- covery Dating student participants experienced 5 pregnancies in the 5 years following the Discov- ery Dating curriculum. Of 136 students who did not participate in Discovery Dating, there were 32 pregnancies.
Implementation
Discovery Dating provides a process for learning personal prevention skills. The curriculum enables partici- pants to foresee predictable pitfalls of certain choices and the benefits of equal partnership based upon facts and information compared with compatible goals.
The full or partial Discovery Dating curriculum is successful in many settings including fifth through twelfth grade classrooms, financial assistance education programs, parents’ groups, prison, youth clubs, extra-curricular programs, mentor programs, men and women’s support groups and more.
The Discovery Dating curriculum was developed by WWGP Executive Director Alice Skenandore.
