Jane Barry is a printmaker based in Christchurch, New Zealand. She studied at Christchurch Polytechnic from 1995-1997, earning a diploma in art and design with a double major in printmaking. Her practice involves drypoint engraving and monoprinting onto Perspex plates using a printing press to create original works on paper. Barry is interested in mark making, composition, texture and the atmospheric and emotional qualities inspired by landscapes. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and her work is held in collections in New Zealand, Australia, the United States and United Kingdom.

1. Jane Barry – Artist Biography
I am a printmakerbasedinChristchurch. From1995-1997 I studiedatChristchurchPolytechnic,
completingaDiplomainArtand Designwithadouble majorinprintmaking. Iworkfromhome
where my pressand workshop are.
My practice as a printmakerinvolves Drypointengravingand MonoprintingontoPerspexplates,
printedthrough a presscreatingoriginal workson paper. Worksare furtherembellishedoff the
presswithothermediaandappliedtechniques –hand printedrice paper, chincolle, graphite pencil
and Indianink. Iam interestedinmarkmaking, composition, blocksof pigment,collage andtexture.
Much inspirationisderivedfromland,sky andseascapes - the atmosphericqualitythe powersof
nature give these and the emotional feelingsthese placesincite.Othertimes imagery comesbyway
of somethingmore figurative.Ihave beenanexhibitingartistfornearly18 years.7 of whichwere
withThe Centre of ContemporaryArtinChristchurch(CoCA) quite literallyupuntil the Christchurch
earthquake inFebruary2011.
I love workingwiththismedium.The combination of paper,inkandpress.The tactile nature, the
smell of it.The appealingunpredictabilityandsurprise that are lenttoworkingwiththe printed
image.
