Stainless steel is an alloy of steel and chromium. With improved strength benefits
when compared to mild steel, stainless steel does not corrode, rust or stain. The
metal forms a passive, thin film of Chromium oxide which acts as a barrier to
corrosion by blocking oxygen diffusion to the steel surface and into the metals
internal structure.
The Chromium forms a passivation layer of Chromium (111) Oxide (Cr2O3) when
exposed to the atmosphere. Too thin to be visible to the naked eye the Cr2O3
allows the metal to remain lustrous and smooth and impervious to water and air.
The process of stainless steel passivation results in the protective layer reforming
when the metal is scratched or abraded.
All Heimdall towerlights are manufactured using 3Cr12 Stainless steel which is
certified to ASTM A240 UNS S41003. This gives the Heimdall towerlight body panels,
bunded chassis, fuel and hydraulic tanks and all structural parts the following;
• Corrosion resistance 250 × greater than common mild steel.
• Higher strength than common mild steel — 3Cr12 tensile strength 450–650 Mpa
• Excellent impact resistance
• Eliminates the need for protective coatings
• Eliminates underpaint creep
