Diogo Cao was born in Portugal in the 15th century and made two voyages along the west coast of Africa, becoming the first Portuguese person to sail beyond the equator into Africa. On his first voyage from 1482-1483, he discovered the Congo River and made contact with the Congo kingdom, sailing south along the coast until Angola. His second voyage from 1485-1486 took him even further south to Namibia, where he sailed up the Congo River and left an inscription on a stone documenting his passage. He married and had four children before dying off the coast of Namibia.
