The document discusses human rights and equal opportunities for older people. It provides an overview of the International Federation on Ageing (IFA), an international non-governmental organization established in 1973 to advocate for policies and practices that improve quality of life for older adults worldwide. The document then outlines key issues facing older populations like age discrimination, poverty, care needs, and social exclusion. It also describes international actions taken to promote older adult rights, such as UN principles established in 1991 and discussions held in Vienna in 1982 and Madrid in 2002 where governments agreed to monitor older adult rights.
This brochure "Ageing Trends in Regions and Cities" is an extract from the forthcoming OECD publication "Sustainable Urban Development Policies in Ageing Societies", which will establish a common understanding on how cities address issues related to population ageing in OECD countries.

This document discusses making urban environments more age-friendly. It introduces the WHO Age-Friendly Cities program and the eight domains of an age-friendly city, including outdoor spaces and buildings. It examines features like accessible design, ground textures, footways, signage, and seating that can impact older adults. While physical changes are important, it also discusses the less tangible aspects like people's perceptions and participation. Creating truly age-friendly spaces requires involvement at multiple scales from individuals to neighborhoods. There is growing interest in research and practice around designing cities for older residents.

This document discusses Ireland's Age Friendly County Programme, which aims to make counties more livable for older adults. It works at both the national and municipal levels. At the national level, it establishes an Ageing Well Network with members from government, businesses, non-profits and older adults. It also coordinates several national initiatives. At the municipal level, counties follow a 12 step process that includes establishing forums, conducting studies, creating strategies and affiliating with the WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities. The program seeks to help older adults feel included, stay in their homes, lead active lives and feel safe. Stakeholders can contribute through initiatives like time banks, dementia programs and social activities. Lessons learned include

Helky Koskela.Active participation in nursing homes: Is it possible?moigoda
This document discusses active participation for elderly residents in nursing homes. It notes that while Finland struggles with some social problems, good elder care still exists. Active participation is key to well-being and can involve visitors, outdoor activities, social interaction, and having one's needs and wishes respected. Even elderly with dementia or frailty can participate through methods like games, photos, and observation. Participation should be the goal as isolation is more harmful than other health risks.

Ecuador has over 14 million inhabitants, and the "Sixty and a Bit" project in Quito aims to improve quality of life for seniors. It provides recreational activities and healthcare access for those with limited mobility. Over 11% of Ecuadorians are illiterate and many seniors live alone, so the program combats isolation through community centers. It also promotes social inclusion, independence, and active aging for Ecuador's growing elderly population. Foreigners can volunteer with customized programs focused on needs, location preferences, and Spanish instruction.
