1. National Night
Out was started in
1984 to strengthen
neighborhood
spirit and police-
community
partnerships, among
other goals. For six
years, Touchmark
has participated by
celebrating National
Morning Out.
Activities included a
breakfast, golf cart
parade, and mini carnival with a dunk tank and games—including a pie-eating contest. Members of
the Meridian police and the K-9 unit gave a demonstration, and local firefighters also arrived with a
fire truck. City officials also participated.
Each year, Touchmark celebrates Active Aging Week the last
week of the month. Promoted by the International Council on
Active Aging, the week focuses on the many positive things that
people can do to change the way they age. The community’s
theme this year is Experiencing the Full Life.
Everyone is invited to celebrate Monday, Sep. 23 through
Friday, Sep 27. This fun week will feature volunteer
opportunities as Touchmark gives back to the community,
hosts a fitness walk, and features speakers and workshops focusing on wellness. See the calendar and

Summer fun and memories
During an outing to Boise Basque Block, residents toured the Basque Museum and Boarding House. They
came upon an oak tree that has grown from a cutting of the famous Gernika oak, a symbol of Basque
strength, democracy, and nationalism. The group enjoyed a sunny afternoon learning about the Basques
in the Boise area and were lucky enough to visit on a day that offered fresh paella in front of the Basque
Market. Several residents enjoyed a sample of this traditional Spanish dish.
Members of the American Legion color guard presented and raised the flag for the Fourth of July
celebration. The Touchmark quartet performed the national anthem, and US Navy Commander Ret. Bill
West recited portions of the Declaration of Independence. Everyone enjoyed cool lemonade, a video
recording of the Changing of the Guard at Arlington recorded by resident Bill Rank, and a traditional
barbecue.

in Europe and Asia are
improving at a faster rate.
Why is the US less healthy
than other countries?
The researchers point to
poor dietary practices and
inadequate physical activity
as two of the driving forces. In
fact, dietary risks moved ahead
of smoking as the leading cause
of disability and death in the
study released recently in the
American Journal of Medicine.
Christopher Murray, MD,
DPhil, is a professor of Global
Health at the University of
Washington and director of
the IHME. He presented the
findings of the study at an
event hosted by First Lady
Michelle Obama as part of her
Let’s Move! campaign.
